HP MediaSmart Server EX470 review

The HP MediaSmart Server EX470 and Windows Home server should mean little effort or expertise is required to get the most from digital media from your PC system or home network.

It's early days yet for WHS, and it'll be interesting to see what HP's rivals can come up with. But as a first version the HP MediaSmart Server EX470 is extremely promising. It's a good match for a PC-using household, and delivers handsomely on its...

Review: HP Mediasmart Server EX470 server

Slow off the starting blocks, but HP's Windows Home Server interface is polished

HP MediaSmart Server (EX470)

The new HP MediaSmart Server is a handsome Windows Home Server appliance that also works as an iTunes server.

Generous drive expandability. Fast performance on Gigabit networks. A compatible media-oriented companion product line on the way from HP.

Wired Ethernet connectivity only. No print server. Drives are not hot-swappable.

Another thing to consider is that even though the MediaSmart is headless, it's still built as a super-mini-tower. It's not well designed for slipping into an entertainment center, for example. And even if your entertainment center can hold it, you've...

HP MediaSmart Server EX470

The box itself looks great. It's a blue-black case with glowing blue LEDs that indicate occupied drive bays, power, and server health. A front-mount case door keeps the drive bays hidden from view. Like all WHS boxes, this one runs headless—without a...

The HP MediaSmart Server is a well-executed example of what a Microsoft Windows Home Server can be. All of WHS's backup and management features are leveraged, and HP has added media-serving smarts of its own in the form of an iTunes server.

Hacking The HP EX470/475 MediaSmart Servers

HP's MediaSmart Servers are basically low-power PCs running Windows Home Server software from a corner of your house. Ed Tittel takes his apart ...

Comparing refurb to new prices, it costs about $220 to move up from an EX470 to an EX485 and $290 to move up from an EX475 to an EX487. What I aim to describe in this review is how you can add 750 GB of storage, a more powerful CPU, and upgrade the...

HP Mediasmart Irritations

HP Mediasmart continues the HP tradition of overlaying good software with poor software, and doing that in spades. I have tried and tried to use the various features. They all more or less work and they all fail in the obvious department.

As network attached storage, it works

Intrusive, misleading messages. Features hard to use

Purchased for new small office

First let me say that I am not at all a techie but I seem to have common sense and that seems to have let me accomplish the task of making this server work.

Small, easy to use, reasonably priced

Not for total beginners. One glitch after 3 days of use
