For such a light, compact laptop, the Lifebook certainly punches above its weight, handling office and video-editing tasks with aplomb. Its real strength, though, is its battery life -- by swapping the DVD drive for an additional battery, the Lifebook...

Neat design; respectable spec; DVD drive is swappable for another battery, giving a supernatural life in excess of ten hours.

Slippy outer casing is a potential drop hazard; reflective screen can be annoying even in moderately bright light.

Good battery life, lightweight, multiformat DVD burner

Small screen, flawed keyboard, sealed hard drive

If you consider battery life and light weight the most important laptop criteria, give the LifeBook P7010 a close look. You could probably live with this 1.5-kilogram unit's less-than-perfect keyboard and screen.

Loaded ultraportable has stupendous battery life, but the small keyboard takes some getting used to.

Includes a fingerprint reader

Sluggish WorldBench performance

If you consider battery life and light weight the most important laptop criteria, give the LifeBook P7010 a close look. You can probably live with this 3.4-pound unit's less-than-perfect keyboard and screen.

Includes a 3-in-1 memory card reader. Modular media bay for upgrade or swapping. 802.11a/g wireless.

No DVD-RW included. Plastic port covers are flimsy and detachable, so may be lost. Matte black finish acts as a magnet for fingerprints.

If you're after light weight and you'll mainly use your notebook for watching DVDs, the Fujitsu is it. But if you want performance as well as light weight, look to the IBM ThinkPad X40.

If you're looking for a smaller laptop but refuse to sacrifice features, connectivity, or performance, take a hard look at the LifeBook P7010D.

Lightweight; bright screen; biometric security; loaded with connections; CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive; solid performance; excellent battery life; moderate price.

Picky fingerprint recognition; crowded keyboard; lacks a lid clasp.

Although it's small, the excellent LifeBook P7010D makes no sacrifices on features, connectivity, or performance.
