Dell XPS 420

Dell's XPS range has seen varied success over the years. We loved the M1330 XPS notebook but its bigger brother, the M1730, was much less well received. Moreover, its desktops have always had trouble hitting the mark, being generally a bit overpriced...

Dell XPS 420 desktop PC

This cutting edge configuration of Dell's XPS 420 multimedia computer featured a top-of-the-line 3GHz Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9650 Intel CPU, but its other performance-enhancing components are strictly second-tier.

Despite a few gripes, we like the Dell XPS 420, another solid desktop PC from Dell.

Dell XPS 420

A powerhouse PC with quad-core performance and a huge 1TB of storage.

Innovation is always at a premium in the intensely competitive arena of desktop PCs, where profit margins are tight and extravagance rarely seen. So it's good to see Dell making an effort with its latest desktop PC.The XPS 420 bucks the trend, not...

For its price this machine isn't as strong a performer as we'd hoped, but it is still going to please gamers and editors of video or photos plus the Blu-ray drive is a big bonus.

BDR-R drive, SoundBlaster X-Fi Extreme card, SideShow device

Price, limited upgrade space

Dell XPS 420

The Dell XPS 420 is a multimedia desktop that integrates a SideShow display on top of the front panel.

Quick quad-core performance. Blu-ray drive. SideShow display. DataSafe (local and online components). Xcelerator transcoding accelerator. 15-month antivirus subscription. MCE Gyration remote option. 802.11n wireless networking.

Competition has HD DVD and Blu-ray for the same price. It's way big. SideShow apps are still limited. No multimedia hard drive bay.

Dell XPS 420 Desktop Computer [Penryn QX9650 version]

A handsome PC with strong performance, the XPS 420 lacks the expandability that some high-end power desktops have.

Strong performance ; Front panel video transcoder

Only one free bay

The front of the XPS 420's midsize tower case is composed of a glossy black plastic that looks great when clean, but tends to highlight fingerprints. Our test unit included several nice options: front-mounted S-Video and RCA ports with the unique...

Dell XPS 420

This XPS 420 multimedia computer we tested with Intel's upcoming mainstream 2.83-GHz Penryn Q9550 processor was identical to the XPS 420 with the overclockable QX9650 CPU in every other respect except in price. At $2729, this Q9550 model is exactly...

Low cost, high performance ; Blu-ray Disc and Bluetooth

Only one free bay

A solid performer that costs considerably less than Dell's QX9650-based XPS 420 configuration.

Dell XPS 420

SideShow screen extends Vista Gadgets to the top of the system; nearly complete line of digital-media options lets you make this system the hub of your networked home; strong support.

Not quite the best bang for the buck as far as pure processing power; no HD DVD/Blu-ray combo option; needs better software to expose the benefits of the hardware MPEG-2 transcoder.

Dell's new XPS 420 offers almost all of the latest in PC-based digital-video capability, as well as a few unique features you won't find elsewhere. The default configuration fares poorly against the other new PCs, but if you're willing to spend money...

Dell XPS 420

Dell widens the target market for the XPS, scoring a few hits and misses.

Excellent price/performance. Thoughtful software bundle. Priority 24/7 phone/Web/e-mail support.

Sideshow module is pointless in current form. No hand holds make the case difficult to carry. Second rate keyboard/mouse combo. Could be quieter.

The XPS 420 is priced right for the performance and the market it's aimed at, and includes a few nifty touches to boot.
