iMac with Retina 5K Display review (late-2014)

A stunning 14 million pixel display is backed up by top performance

5K display; Workstation performance; Thunderbolt 2; Upgradeable RAM

Price jumps up quickly when configuring

It’s expensive, but the iMac’s strong performance and unparalleled 5K display make it ideal for design, photography and video-editing work.

Apple's 5K iMac impresses expert eyes

The 27-inch iMac gets a stunning new screen for photo and video pros, but few other changes.

The new 27-inch Apple iMac adds a stunning 5K display for not much more than last year's high-end model. The design, while not updated, remains the gold standard for all-in-one desktops.

Except for the new screen and a different GPU, the components are essentially unchanged from last year's version. The high starting price only gets you a mid-level Core i5 processor.

Apple skips 4K and goes directly to what the company calls a 5K display in this expensive, extravagant all-in-one iMac desktop that will appeal to photo and video professionals -- or anyone else looking for the best possible screen resolution.

Apple iMac 27inch, 2014

Officially called the iMac with Retina 5K display, the screen uses a new material, oxide-based TFT, and borrowed tech from the Retina iPad to reduce pixel crosstalk to keep images sharp. The panel is also just as bright as the previous-gen model, but...

Review: Apple iMac 27 inch with Retina 5K display (late 2014)

Apple may have kickstarted the whole “Retina” high-resolution screen thing in computers with its MacBook Pro, but its desktop computers have never really shared the love. Until now, that is, as Apple's iMac gets a dose of a Retina reality, and we wish...

Such a beautiful jaw-droppingly brilliant screen; Excellent colour and brightness, with so much of each to offer; Monitor goes beyond the 4K UHD resolution, and is technically 5K, meaning video editors can see the full 4K picture when they’re editing;...

Apple’s SD card slot placement is still questionable on the back; Expensive;

Review: Apple's 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display

After years of waiting, Mac faithful can finally purchase an ultra high-resolution display made by Apple that not only mates quality with a competitive price tag, but comes with a capable built-in computer to boot.

Retina 5K display is incredibly bright, detailed and accurate ; Ability to cut 4K video with screen real estate to spare ; Priced in line with standalone ultra high-res monitors

Base configuration needs more RAM ; Retina 5K display, buffed internals command $700 premium ; Apple's 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display starts at $2,499 (configuration tested) from the Online Apple Store, but Apple Authorized Reseller B&H Photo...

From the moment you power on the iMac with Retina 5K display and are met with OS X Yosemite's familiar Apple logo rendered in crisp relief, it is exceedingly clear that Apple has built something special.

Review: iMac with Retina 5K display is among Apple’s brightest lights

Among the many new and improved technologies promoted by Apple, one of the most attractive has been the “Retina display.” This is a marketing term rather than a technical one and refers to displays with a pixel density where individual pixels are...

Gorgeous display ; Plenty of ports ; Solid performance

Fan comes (and stays) on when very heavily tasked

The iMac with Retina 5K display has a lot going for it. The display is gorgeous, at $2,500 it’s like getting a free computer with your high-resolution display, it has enough ports to please all but the most demanding user, it won’t jack up your power...

Apple iMac 21.5-inch Review (2014)

If you're in the market for an iMac and usually stick to basic tasks like Web surfing, word processing and video streaming, the 2014 version of the 21.5-inch iMac makes an excellent option at $1,099. You'll enjoy the same razor-sharp design, brilliant...

Attractive, slim design ; Vivid 1080p display ; Included iWork and iLife suites ; Comfortable keyboard and mouse

Relatively weak graphics ; Inconvenient port placement

The 2014 iMac 21.5-inch makes Apple's sexy all-in-one more affordable than ever while still providing solid overall performance.
