Apple eMac (1.42GHz, SuperDrive DL)

Dual-layer, dual-format DVD drive. Very good all-in-one solution. 512MB of memory is now, finally, standard.

Integrated stereo speakers have limited range. Graphics non-upgradeable. Case is a bit bulky compared to the iMac.

Apple eMac (Iss. 21 2004)

Apple's entry-level desktop, the Apple eMac, is adequate for school kids and adults with basic computing needs.

Compact all-in-one form factor. Stylish white case. Lowest price in this roundup.

3D graphics are a little anemic for today?s games. No DVD writable drive at this price. 40GB drive too small for today?s needs.

If your household or school is Mac-centric, we suggest spending a few more bucks to get the high-end eMac or even splurging on the 17-inch iMac ($1,374 with 512MB of memory). For everyone else, there are simply better $999 systems out there, such as...

Apple eMac

The entry-level Apple eMac is a good introduction to the Macintosh world, and it has the power to keep elementary- and middle-school students happy.

We found the eMac's Photoshop performance to be similar to the Windows desktop PCs reviewed here after we upgraded the eMac to 512MB of RAM. And with its ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card, it's capable of playing basic to intermediate 3D games and 2D...

Apple eMac PPC review: Apple eMac PPC

Excellent 17-inch CRT display; easy setup; inexpensive, updated models offer 1.25GHz G4s with 256MB of memory.

Limited expansion; only 32MB of graphics memory; meager documentation; mediocre warranty.

The eMac delivers an attractive, adequately speedy, easy-to-use PC without the flat-panel iMac's relatively high price.

Apple eMac (SuperDrive)

We think the SuperDrive-equipped eMac is the first Mac you should look at in the value space.
