Sony Handycam DCR-SR100

There is a bewildering array of camcorder formats on the market at present, ranging from the stalwart tape-based Mini DV right through to flash-based ...

Good quality video and still pictures, easy to use software, lots of features

Large frame, slightly awkward to hold, clunky interface

The Sony DCR-SR100 is one of the first hard disk based camcorders on the market, and demonstrates why the technology is here to stay.

Sony's DCR-SR100 disk-based camcorder reviewed

Remember that hot Sony DCR-SR100 disk-based Handycam we first set eyes to at CES? Yeah, the one with a 30GB hard disk, 3.3 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch touch-screen LCD, and 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound recording -- that one. Well, CamcorderInfo laid...

Image quality

Sony Handycam DCR-SR100

Superior image quality for a single-chip, MPEG-2 camcorder; decent still photos; hotshoe for a light or a microphone; fluid and fast focus.

Too dependent on its touch-screen interface; small LCD.

The Sony Handycam DCR-SR100 is a solid hard-drive-based option, especially if you like Sony's touch-screen interfaces.

Sony DCR-SR100 30GB Handycam Camcorder

Very good video quality. Includes a viewfinder. Excellent night mode.

Expensive for a hard drive camcorder. Still-image features could be better. Bulky.

The DCR-SR100 30, Sony's first hard drive camcorder, is the best of its kind thus far, but it hasn't attained EC quality yet.

Sony DCR-SR100 30GB Handycam

The Sony DCR-SR100 30GB Handycam isn't flawless, but it's the best hard drive camcorder I've seen.

Very good video quality. Includes a viewfinder. Excellent night mode.

Expensive for a hard drive camcorder. Still-image features could be better. Bulky.

Sony Handycam DCR-SR100

For those who want to do away with tape and don't want to worry about manual controls, this might just be the easiest HDD camcorder available -- but check it works with your computer first!

Seven hours of recording storage ; Drop sensor ; Empty\" feature for clearing the hard drive ; Carl Zeiss lens ; Nice touchscreen

All manual settings are menu driven ; Check computer operating system compatibility ; No external battery charger

This reviewer dislikes Sony's accessory shoes, which are sunken, with a cover attached by the weakest of plastic straps, destined to break or at least rub against a microphone. Perhaps there's the expectation that most consumers will rarely use...

Quick Camcorder Reviews: Sony DCR-SR100 Camcorder

Great video and still performance from large CMOS sensor, - Very easy to use - even more so than Sonys that use external media, - Big, sharp LCD & HDMI terminal

Recently outclassed by the Sony HDR-SR1, - Not much in the way of manual controls, - Bulky compared to most consumer camcorders

Sony DCR-SR100 Camcorder Review

A pattern is emerging. JVC puts a product out on the market, one that everyone wants. The hot new thing. Then Sony, seizing on the opportunity, leapfrogs over JVC with a slightly better version, and takes home the spoils. It happened with high...

Camcorder Review: Sony DCR-SR100 Hard Drive Camcorder

Talk about the whole package, the Sony DCR-SR100 Handycam Camcorder not only captures sharp digital video directly to a 30-gigabyte hard drive, but it also serves as a decent digital still camera as well

Crisp, clear picture Versatile Large Storage Compact design

The Sony DCR-SR100 is an excellent solution for hobbyists, or travelers who want to capture great video and still images without having to bother with a lot of buttons. Being able to store large amounts of video to the 30-gigabyte hard drive is also an...
