JVC PICSIO GC-FM1 Pocket Camcorder

JVC enters the growing pocket camcorder market with its PICSIO GC-FM1. James tries it out.

Despite its superior video resolution and digital camera capabilities, the PICSIO is actually considerably smaller than the Flip UltraHD, and slightly shorter even than the Creative Vado HD. But it doesn’t have a built-in USB plug, instead relying on a...

JVC Picsio GC-FM1 camcorder

Looking like an accessory from a P Diddy video - before the recession prompted an abrupt halt to the flouting of bling - JVC's oddly named Picsio is outwardly set to stun with its glitzy pearl-like finish that is more night club than camera club....

Cool design, lightweight and compact, HDMI connectivity offered alongside AV and USB out, memory expandable via (optional) SD or SDHC cards

Mono microphone and speaker, screen visibility compromised when cropped to ape 16:9 widescreen ratio, no convenient flip out USB arm offered as on some competitors

Available in a garish pink, blue or much more attractive black, as with any mobile sized camcorder, users shouldn't expect quality to match that from a camcorder with a larger lens, optical zoom and a price tag five times as much. That said, viewed in...

JVC GC-FM1 review

But unfortunately for the JVC GC-FM1, pocket-camcorder championships aren't won on paper.

All in all, the JVC GC-FM1 costs too much to recommend, considering its shortcomings compared with the Kodak Zi8. Its video quality in good lighting is among the best we've seen, and its highlight definition is a strong suit. However, the build...

JVC GC-FM1 HD pocket camcorder

The GC-FM1 HD shoots great bright-light video, but is hampered by its build, finicky controls and execution of marquee features

Excellent video in optimum lighting, good 4x digital zoom and macro mode

Poor low-light performance, cheap plastic finish, too expensive for what it offers

The JVC GC-FM1 HD pocket camcorder shoots some of the best bright-light video we've seen, but it's hampered by its plastic build, its finicky controls, and the execution of its marquee features.

JVC Picsio GC-FM1

Update (10/28/09): An earlier version of this review noted that the JVC CG-FM1 doesn't have video-resolution adjustment options. In fact, you can toggle between the 1080p, 720p, VGA, and QVGA resolutions by tapping the left navigation button twice...

Very good 1080p footage in bright light ; Landscape/macro toggle

Cheap-feeling plastic build ; Limited and finicky controls

The JVC GC-FM1 HD pocket camcorder shoots some of the best bright-light video we've seen, but it's hampered by its plastic build, its finicky controls, and the execution of its marquee features.

JVC Picsio GC-FM1

JVC's Picsio GC-FM1 is cute, compact, and captures HD video along with 8-megapixel photos.

Attractive, compact design. Records 1440-by-1080p HD video. 8-megapixel still-image capture. HDMI out.

No USB Arm, charges via cable. Very low-quality speaker. Lacks external microphone. Subpar still images.

JVC Picsio GC-FM1 review: JVC Picsio GC-FM1

JVC Picsio GC-FM1

Nice size; macro mode; electronic image stabilization; takes SDHC cards.

Garish-looking design with hard-to-use buttons; lame software.

The JVC GC-FM1's impractical design and poor software hobble an otherwise competent mini camcorder competitor.

JVC Picsio GC-FM1

Small and light. Optional HDMI output. Not expensive.

Footage is grainy and choppy. No supplied storage. Questionable looks. Some buttons require a firm prod.

The Picsio doesn't really do anything to distinguish itself from the competition at the same price point, apart from its questionable aesthetics.
