Panasonic HDC-SX5 'hybrid' Camcorder

It can record to both DVDs and SDHC cards, but what's it like as a camcorder? Rob gives you the director's cut.

However, in this mode (called HG) you can only fit 14 minutes of video onto a 2.8GB single-layer 8cm DVD. This rises to 26 minutes on a dual-layer version, but it’s still not a lot when you’re used to tapes holding a whole hour. There are two 1,440 x...

Panasonic HDC-SX5 review

Full HD recording with more versatility than ever before

Stunning image quality ; Good range of features ; Good value for beginners and upgraders alike

Controls take time to get used to ; Can suffer from wind noise

Some users are going to find this model a bit too big and bulky for their liking. However, the superb HD picture quality and the availability of two excellent recording media make up for this. A very good product for the price

Along with its sister product, the HDC-SD5, the new HDC-SX5 is one of two new AVCHD camcorders from Panasonic that are designed to take advantage of our new high-def displays by offering the full 1920 x 1080 pixel high-definition resolution

Despite being soundly beaten with the ugly stick, this is a quality piece of hardware capable of capturing beautiful high-def video. If you can get past the bulky design, you won't be disappointed.

Unsurpassed high-def visuals, two recording formats in one, plenty of modes and features

Bulky and unattractive design, poorly designed directional stick

Review: Panasonic HDC-SX5

Yes, yes yes, we know…another Panasonic in our round-up. But wefelt that if the HDC-SD9 is a role model for how to build a greattapeless...

Comfy ergonomics. Good video quality

Expensive and bulky. Not meant for novice shooters

Panasonic HDC-SX5

Here's the most versatile camcorder of the bunch, letting you record 28 minutes of its best-quality video per 3-inch DVD. If you don't feel like dealing with discs, you can cram 80 minutes of HD footage on an 8GB SDHC flash memory card instead. If you...

Versitility is key here - records to SDHC and DVD; 3-second preroll recording

Some contrast issues in very bright or medium light

We like the three-second preroll function that records the previous three seconds before you push the record button when you’re using an SDHC flash memory card. In bright light, this sucker cranked out images with astonishing clarity, splashing...

Panasonic HDC-SX5 Camcorder Review

The second generation of AVCHD camcorders have been rolling onto shelves in recent months, mostly offering mild upgrades or occasional downgrades. Panasonic is trying a different route. The HDC-SX5 combines the media from both of its first-generation...

The Panasonic HDC-SX5's primary selling point is its hybrid recording - the ability to record high definition AVCHD video to both DVD and SD/SDHC memory cards. In most instances, however, we found the DVD medium to be more of a hassle than a...

Panasonic HDC-SX5 First Impressions Camcorder Review

It's funny how quickly tech language changes. Just a short while ago, the term "hybrid" meant a camcorder that can also capture still pictures. Now that we take this feature for granted, the term has been reappropriated. "Hybrid" now refers to...
