JVC Everio GZ-MG505EK HDD Camcorder

If you don't want to carry a bag full of DV tapes with you, try this hard disk based camcorder from JVC.

Like the MC500EK, the MG50EK is based on a trio of 1/4.5in CCDs, each with 1.3-megapixels of resolution. You don't need that many pixels to shoot video, but JVC gangs them together and adds a bit of interpolation using its Megabrid Engine to make...

The JVC Everio G GZ-MG505 Digital Media Camera is the flagship member of the JVC Everio family. The GZ-MG505 records DVD-quality video or thousands of photo-quality stills to a 30 GB hard disk. JVC combines this with 3-CCD/5- megapixel performance.The...

SimplyDV Review: JVC Everio GZ-MG505 HDD camcorder

Great handling, good picture quality under controlled situations, excellent clip management and control of video and stills. Everio anti-G power-off a very useful tool, too.

Image quality slightly lacking in darker corners, with resolution failing somewhat on distant landscape detail. Lack of manual focus ring, lack of direct-to-DVD connectivity with Apple Macs

As HDD technology goes, this 3CCD model is a great convenience for the newbie, and 7 hours recording at max quality is a major plus point. A great all-rounder for someone wishing to avoid tape.

Good quality video, Easy to use, Small

Poor quality still images, Short battery life, No viewfinder

A great little camcorder only let down by poor quality still images and below par battery life.

JVC Everio GZ-MG505

JVC Everio GZ-MG505

Generally satisfying video and still-photo quality; light and compact design; appropriate and usable manual controls.

No eye-level viewfinder; requires a pass through the manual to understand operation; no internal lens cover; renders reds poorly; video looks washed out on computer.

A well-designed hard-disk-based camcorder, the JVC Everio GZ-MG505 produces video and stills that look great on TV. But its price might make you hit Pause.
