JVC GZ-MG50EK - Digital Camcorder

Tired of carrying loads of DV tapes around with you? JVC has the answer to your prayers.

The JVC GZ-MG50EK won’t appeal to enthusiasts. Instead, for those with more serious videomaking itentions we’d recommend Sony's amazing HDR-HC1E. But for a general-purpose holiday camcorder, the JVC has a lot to commend it. With so much storage...

JVC Everlo GZ-MG50

JVC's Everio GZ-MG50 has a 1.3MP sensor and a voracious light sucking F1.2 lens. With its 1.8-inch hard drive it's as light as a feather too

1.8-inch hardrive makes it very light. Quick start-up. Can capture images on hard-drive or SD card

You'd be wise to cart around spare batteries. Lack of proper viewfinder

JVC Everio GZ-MG50EK

The JVC Everio started off targeting the gadget-loving early adopter. The GZ-MC500EK had desirability written all over it. But it's still around £750, and yet only records an hour of best-quality video out of the box. So JVC has come up with the Everio...

There are cheaper Everio MGs, but low-light performance lets them down. The MG50 is stronger in this respect. You're paying a premium for the hard disk technology, but if you hate lugging a bagful of tapes around with you, the GZ-MG50 could be right up...

SimplyDV Review: JVC GZ-MG50 Digital Media Camera

Extended recording times, ease of use, random access to clips, G-Sensor, great picture and audio quality

Headphone socket would be useful

This is a great camcorder for leisure users looking for ease of use, convenience of built-in-HDD recording and USB connectivity

A very reasonable alternative for those who want a digital camcorder without the hassle of carrying around spare media.

Lots of recording space, solid still photo functions

MPEG-2 file format, no headphone or mic connections

Image Quality

JVC Everio GZ-MG50

Stores tons of video; very small; fast transfer of video to your computer.

Terrible battery life; inconsistent microphone performance; subpar video quality; requires a computer or stand-alone DVD burner for video transfer.

A mediocre camera in many respects, the JVC Everio GZ-MG50 is nevertheless worth consideration due to its small size and massive video storage capacity.

JVC Everio GZ-MG50 review – 011

Until now, video cameras have meant hours of post-production editing. The new Everio range from JVC helps make movie-making simpler by organising your video into clips that are ready to write to DVD (it records in MPEG2 format). This means that if you...

Connections on the camera are S-video, USB2, AV out and DC mains power. For the seasoned videographer, there is no Firewire socket, but the USB2 cable quickly downloads the MPEG2 data.
