Canon's latest top-end HD camcorder is priced lower and has more features than its predecessor. Does this make for a winning combination?
Fortunately, the most important thing the Canon Legria HF S21 doesn't have in common with the HF S10, at launch, is price. It's still on the costly side, coming in at around a grand. But this is much closer to the competition, making the HF S21 a much...

Full HD camcorder with massive 64GB storage
Movie and stills quality ; HD-to-SD file conversion ; Easy YouTube upload ; Loads of connectivity ; Storage options
Troublesome touchscreen ; Small colour viewfinder ; Considerable investment
Sitting at the pinnacle of Canon's 2010 range of consumer camcorders, the LEGRIA HF S21 is a powerful and practical Full HD model with a 64GB flash memory, 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen and two (yes, two) SD card slots.

This pro-style HD shooter also grabs 8MP stills and has dual SD card slots. But does it justify the big price tag?
Not the easiest camcorder to use, but more than compensates with fine hi-def performance and pro-level features

Featuring a similar barrel shape, the Canon Legria HF S21 is about the same size as a small DV or HDV camera, and records AVCHD-format video on to an internal 64GB flash drive. This can be supplemented with SDHC Cards in its two slots.
The Canon Legria HF S21 is a good HD camcorder but its implementation of touchscreen control prevents it from being a truly great consumer high-definition camcorder.

What's undoubtedly attractive about the HF S21 is its robustness and cool, ready-foraction looks. It's quite heavy, but that will be another plus-point for the more critical digital film-makers, who associate solid build quality with improved...
With the price of high-capacity memory cards cheaper than ever, it's debatable whether its 64GB built-in memory is as much of a selling point as it would have been two years ago despite its usefulness. That aside, the HF S21 is a fabulous addition to...

Though I really liked Canon's 2009 prosumer Vixia HF S1x series, I couldn't fully endorse the HF S10/S11 because it lacked an electronic viewfinder, a feature that higher-end users appreciate. Camcorders with EVFs are easier to hold stably while...
Excellent set of manual features; dual SDHC slots; generally well-designed interface.
Poorly designed touch-screen menu system; short battery life; defaults to low-quality video mode; doesn't support SDXC; relatively expensive.
Though they're an excellent trio of camcorders, the Vixia HF S21, HF S20, and HF S200 are significantly more expensive than their respective competitors, especially since the S20 and S200 lack electronic viewfinders. If you can forgo some of the...

Thanks to its video quality and range of manual controls, the HF S21 is a solid choice if you're a video hobbyist or a pro looking for something portable to complement your workhorse equipment.

Poorly designed touchscreen menu system ; Short battery life ; Defaults to low-quality video mode ; Doesn't support SDXC
If you're a video hobbyist or a pro looking for something portable to complement your workhorse equipment, the Canon Legria HF S21 is a solid choice. But if you don't need the more subtle aspects of the manual controls, such as shutter speeds below...

The Vixia HF S21 ($1399 MSRP) is the new-and-improved flagship camcorder from Canon. With 64GB of internal flash memory, two SD/SDHC memory card slots, and a brand new touchscreen LCD, Canon appears to have put in quite an effort in revamping last...
While Canon spent a good deal of effort improving the features for the HF S21, it didn't do much (if anything) to improve the video performance of the camcorder. In our testing, the HF S21 actually did worse with color accuracy than last year's HF S11,...

The HF S21 is Canon's flagship camcorder for 2010. The camcorder has the same lens and sensor as last year's HF S series from Canon, but this new model includes an impressive 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen, as well as a handy electronic viewfinder. The HF...
We're mostly supportive of the updates made by Canon on the HF S21. The new, 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen is a wonder to behold, but it did have some of the same problems that plague most camcorder touchscreens. It didn't offer precise control, and we...

This camera makes a great little tool for video creators of all levels. Handy, compact and takes great HD footage. A definite buy.
Native 24p, Component and HDMI output, Ultra-crisp focus, Effortless video transfer to computer
Grain in low light, Colors are a bit dull
