Canon HR10 DVD Camcorder

The HR10 brings DVD-based recording to Canon's camcorder line-up. Does it perform as well as we've come to expect?

Canon HR10 review

Keen pricing plus stunning pictures equals top marks

Strong pictures ; Impressive sound ; Good array of features ; Solid build-quality

Optical image stabiliser not very effective ; Awkward fixed viewfinder ; Sluggish close-up focusing

While this is not the best HD camcorder ever tested, we’ve yet to see one deliver a better performance for the price

Canon HR10 Camcorder Review

Lightweight design, advanced optical technologies and the advantage of recording direct to DVD make the Canon HR10 HD camcorder stand out.

HDMI output allows you to play back your movies and photos on a HD compatible TV or computer.

Canon HR10

Canon HR10 is a DVD recordable high definition camcorder. It already comes with a shooting program, i.e., sunset, beach, spotlight, portrait mode, sports mode, snow, fireworks, etc. Among its main features are 2.96 megapixel camcorder sensor...

Canon - HR10 camcorder

Choice, as every shopper recognizes, is both a godsend and a nightmare. It's great to be able to compare lots of versions of the same basic product, but almost impossible to weigh up all the pros ...

While Canon has done its best to make the HR10 compatible in quality with its big sisters in the HDD and MiniDVD domains (and mostly succeeded), it is ultimately hampered by the severe recording limitations of the DVD format.

Canon HR10

The HR10 represents Canon's third dip into the waters of high-definition video; although it's still something of a departure from what has gone before from this photographic specialist.

Highly effective, Washing analogy works well, Versatile, No drivers required, Powerful, with good performance, Excellent warranty, Small footprint, Cheap, Well built and comfortable in use, Compact, Decent system spec, Strong battery life, Sturdily...

Resource-hungry, Quite bulky to lug around, Battery life could be better, No card reader, Underpowered, Dated design and aspect ratio, Bulky aerial, Disappointing battery life, Older CPU, Dated design, Requires two USB ports, Not overly portable,...

An impressive selection of features and a generally very good picture and sound performance make the £600 price tag something of a surprise.

Expert Review

The Canon HR10 is a decent enough DVD camera, offering impressive high-def visuals at a relatively affordable price. However, there are several competing models on the market which offer a superior performance.

Good quality video, extensive range of manual options, HDMI capable

Mini-SD card slot prohibits recording options, viewfinder poorly placed, a bit on the chunky side

Canon HR10 review: Canon HR10

Canon HR10

Nice video and decent photo quality; manual exposure controls; 24p support; full-size HDMI connector.

DVD initialization and finalizing operations are slow; relatively short battery life; can't charge while camcorder is powered on.

Though the Canon HR10 is a decent camcorder, there are better choices for the same money because format performance and compatibility issues make it hard to recommend a DVD-based AVCHD model.

If it weren't for the DVD/AVCHD double whammy, the HR10 might have more to recommend it. For now your best bet is to stick with one of Canon or Sony's tape-based HDV models, or at least avoid the DVD issue and opt for one of the hard-drive-based options.
