Canon HV30 review

The camcorder equivalent of the emperor's new clothes is virtually identical to its predecessor

Superb stills and video ; Tried and tested format ; Better image quality than HDD models ; Faster import than HDD models

Cumbersome to use ; Last year's HV20 is essentially identical

A great example of mature technology that matches equivalently priced HDD models on image quality

Mini DV tape isn't dead yet and this Canon is here to prove it. But is it just a rehash of last year's model?

Not much to tempt you over last year's HV20 but Canon still rules the roost when it comes to raw picture quality

Canon HV30

HDV (1080/60i) camcorder with 10x Canon optically stabilised zoom lens, 2.7-inch LCD, 25p Cinema mode plus a flash and video light for low light action. Measures 88x82x138 mm and weighs 535g. The good Like the warm sound of a vinyl LP, HDV videotape...

With one foot in the past, one in the future and one in the grave, the HV30 has at least 50 percent more feet than most people will need. But if you want an impressive High Def camera that can also handle yesterday’s movies, it’s a safe, heavyweight...

An old dog learns some new tricks

Despite its reliance on an outdated format, the Canon HV30 is a superior high-def camcorder that offers exceptional value for money. If you can get over your anti-tape prejudice and embrace MiniDV, this model will deliver on every level.

Performed excellently in low light, 25p Cine mode, unique and arresting design, extensive audio options

MiniDV is a dying format, may prove a bit bulky for some

Canon Vixia HV30 HDV Camcorder Review

Shoot a Canon... The HV30 is a good camera. It captures really good images for its category. And, even though it isn't tiny, it will fit nicely in a small bag or even an oversized coat pocket.

Excellent image quality, Lots of manual controls, Good price for the feature set

Not very ergonomic, Mic picks up vibration

The image quality is super when seen on an HDTV with 1080p. Considering it's compact size the results are very good. Price is also very competitive compared to other camcorders. I highly recommend this camcorder - Canon has come out with a great product.

Battery life is a bit short - in fact I had to purchase another battery within 2 weeks of buying the camcorder.

Canon HV30

Excellent build quality, reassuring weight, very stylish, video light, connectivity and for myself, in my opinion tape is still king with the benefit of still's to card. Excellent value for money. Looking forward with excitement, to the learning curve...

It's only bad point that I can see, is well documented in all reviews and that is the manual focus being positioned in a strange place. I was fully aware of this before purchase and I am sure that it is just a matter of time spent playing with it,...

Excellent image quality on an easy to use media (miniDV tape) Light weight Excellent features which I am still exploring.

It was expensive but I suspect it is going to be value for money.
