Toshiba SD1700 review: Toshiba SD1700

Toshiba SD1700

Inexpensive; clean menu design; display dimmer/off switch; picture adjustments.

No CD-R/RW, VCD, or MP3 playback; no optical output; subpar anamorphic performance.

The just-the-basics simplicity of Toshiba's SD1700 has its merits if you want to play only DVDs and CDs. However, its lack of CD-R support just doesn't cut it in today's cutthroat entry-level DVD market.

Toshiba SD1700 review

If you've looked through your music collection lately and noticed--perhaps with a twinge of guilt--a large number of CD-Rs, the Toshiba SD1700 isn't for you. It can't play CD-Rs or CD-RWs. However, it can play DVDs pretty well, and it has a simple...

Beware

Although my review title sounds ominous, it's not ALL that bad for the price. I bought it over a year ago for $159. About a month ago I had to check it in to get fix. Apparently, the something with the power went haywire and needed fixing....

Cheap!!!

One VERY big one for me

Tiny but high quality player.

The SD-1700 is definitely the underdog of the DVD player arena. Make no mistake, it is a quality player, but this is the player you by for your Mom to watch DVD's with.

Excellent picture quality. Good feature set for a basic player.

Lacks progressive scan output. Only coaxial digital out instead of both.

If your Lucky it won't Break.

I have 3 Toshiba TV's, two VCR's , so when it was time for a DVD bought one under $100 from UBid.

Price. My Kids could work it- Plug and Play.

30 Days out of warrenty the Sound Quit.

This product doesn't hold up

This DVD player stopped working (in the middle of a movie the sound cut out and the LED display went blank) after about nine months and only 25-30 DVDs. When I had it sent to a Toshiba service center, they wanted $110 to fix it even under the one-year...

Nothing good to say

Poor performance, poor customer service

Toshiba SD1700 DVD Player: Where the Real Entry Level Starts.

If you are finally thinking about making the jump into the world of DVD, you may have been tempted by the cheapest DVD players. Brands like Orbitron and Apex make DVD players that often sell for less that $100. Wow, what a deal, right? Well, that...

Low price, good quality audio and video, apparently more reliable than other low-priced models.

No optical digital output, no MP3 playback, limited CD-R support

Get a Toshiba

A year and a half ago I paid 250.00 for a near top of the line Sony. My wife and I got quite a bit of use out of it, but it was always touchy - if there was any dust or imperfection on the DVD then the machine would just flash "C 1300" at us (No disc...

Plays just about any DVD whether scratched or not.

None

A great intro level DVD Value!

If you're looking for an Intro level DVD player, or perhaps even a DVD Player for your secondary TV, the Toshiba SD1700 would be a wise choice. I've had this DVD Player for over a year now, and have it's given me nothing but enjoyment. I'll describe...

Simple, efficient, value

Remote, can be a tad noisy (read review), No CDR
