Sony's range-topping Blu-ray deck is the first with 4K upscaling
Generous feature list ; Stunning pictures ; Slick operating system
No DivX support ; Menu not ideal for web content selection ; Not cheap
They’re joined by two digital audio outputs – one coaxial, one optical – and analogue stereo output for good measure. Composite video out, Ethernet and a second USB port make up the remainder. That’s pretty much all bases covered, unless you’re looking...

The Sony BDP-S790 4K Blu-ray player brings quad HD to the table
Outstanding image quality ; Multimedia file support ; Plenty of Smart TV choice
Noisy disc transport ; Xrossmediabar UI looks dated ; No FLAC audio file support

Awards 2012 Product of the Year - Blu-ray players
Excellent features and slick, user-friendly interface ; subtle detail in picture is delivered with ease ; refined sound ; future-proofed for 4K displays ; smooth motion handling
Nothing of note
There’s no doubt a feature like the 4K upscaling will only appeal to those who have deep pockets or who want to consider themselves futureproofed should a flotilla of 4K screens arrive in the near future.

The latest flagship in Sony's Blu-ray player fleet is surprisingly self-effacing. It's priced at just over 200 notes and has a relatively generic design (slim, black, gently curved in places), yet it packs a forward-looking feature set that few players...
Powerful AV performance, with good SD upscaling; excellent IPTV selection; wide multimedia file support
Lightweight build quality; Xross Media Bar is a clunky way to navigate the Sony Entertainment Network

Sony's new flagship Blu-ray player packs 4K-capable video upscaling and a tidy price. We test out just how future-proof the S790 is
Packs some serious image quality ; Sounds great, too ; Comes with a number of useful apps
Stylish but not radical ; Jury's out on the 4k upscaling
Fabulous performance, impressive specs, superb usability: meet the new leader of the budget Blu-ray player pack.

The Sony BDP-S790 is more solidly constructed than the company's previous Blu-ray players, with a mix of aluminium and thick plastic making up the majority of the body. The tray-loading Blu-ray drive isn't hidden behind a fascia like on Panasonic's...
Sony's latest, best Blu-ray player is a little pricier than the competition, but it has a few features that make it stand out from the crowd. We think Sony's hit a winner with the BDP-S790's speed and diverse range of features.

Smart Network 3D Blu-ray Player
Untampered 1080p Playback ; Excellent scaling of DVDs ; Impressive handling of interlaced signals ; SACD playback ; Built-in WiFi ; Extensive VoD Services ; Media streaming works very well ; Stylish and solid construction ; Remote app is very good ;...
Disc loading is slow - especially DVDs ; No 7.1 analogue audio outputs

This Blu-ray player works with next-generation 4K TVs, and is powerful and speedy
Excellent features ; Class-leading connectivity ; Fast operation
4K is unnecessary, at the moment ; Web browser is mediocre ; Long text input is a chore
Sony's latest, best Blu-ray player is a little pricier than the competition, but it has a few features that make it stand out from the crowd. We think Sony's hit a winner with the BDP-S790's speed and diverse range of features.

care about quality. But once we determine that the video and audio quality are excellent, as they are with this Sony BDP-S790, well, then I want to see what I get for my $230*.

The Sony BDP-S790 does a good job of being a high-end player at an affordable price. Dual HDMI outputs, Original Resolution mode, and multiple video settings are available to work well in any system...
The Sony BDP-S790 does a good job of being a high-end player at an affordable price. Dual HDMI outputs, Original Resolution mode, and multiple video settings are available to work well in any system, and there is the 4K scaling if you have a display...
