Upgrading

I was able to upgrade this player to the BD.4.894.00 firmware by downloading that firmware from the BD550 unit, copying it to a USB stick and upgrading the player. It worked fine, and you end up with later firmware than by doing an online update.

Low price

Difficult to upgrade firmware

What Morlok8k says

1 to Morlok8k's comments. I too couldn't update via the network and had to download the firmware from LG's website. A couple of additional notes to clarify the process: The firmware page (Drivers & Software tab) lists firmware files for the BD551....

Nice Simple Blu Ray Player

Worth the price for what you get and the formats included. Not all the bells and whistles some want but for simple and being able to watch avi divx on the player along with blu ray is a nice feature via the usb

Plays AVI, Divx, Blu Ray smong other formats. Easy setup and works with large external hard drives via the usb on the front of player. Blu Ray has nice picture and works great

None that concerned me. Was exactly what I was looking for and the price

Working cheap blu-ray player

If you want a simple cheap blu-ray player then this is it. If you want a radio, a computer, and blu-ray player and a robotic dog, then this is not for you. You get what you pay for. I wanted a blu-ray player. That is what this is.

Plays Blu-ray movies. Simple to use. Period. Be careful of reading a bad review from people who want their blu-ray player to take them to the moon and back

Not Bad

Bought on Black Friday. Not a bad unit. dvd player already broke so I decided to get a new unit. Lucky this one was low price. I would like to try it again with the Ps3. But my brother has it now. Need to read more about the audio mix settings. I don't...

Plays blu-ray ; Plays MKV files off the front usb port. usb port is covered and does not show

no netflix but I already have a roku box, so not a big issue. Some reason the quality of the picture isn't as good as the ps3 ; Usb port is in the front of the unit

its ok

I havent tested youtube or picassa. how to upgrade: this assumes that it came with BD.4.380.00 out of the box it wont upgrade to the newest version over the ethernet. (it will get to about 50% downloaded and fail.) go to LG's website, and find the...

AVI files (divix, xvid) and .MKV files work! blueray discs work. It plays video with the most basic of functionality ; i got it at a local store on black friday for $50. for that price, its worth the following hassles

From just reading the box and its features, this product seems pretty sweet, but its user interface is quite lacking ; the accuweather defaults to Celsius every time you load it up - even if your saved location is in the US ; Upgrading is a pain - and...

Works Fine, Added Features

1) Plays Blu-Ray discs in 1920x1080p resolution with 5.1 sound. It also plays DVDs and CDs. Nothing to complain about. It works for what it's supposed to do ; 2) Bonus: Attach a USB Hard Drive, and it plays videos of assorted resolutions, video codecs,...

When resuming a Blu-Ray disc, it said something about prohibited internet access when the network connection was not even plugged in nor was it ever. This behavior makes me think the player was not well tested before being released to market. It hasn't...

Nothing fancy, but does what I want it to

I bought 2 of these, one for my study and one for my mom. I have the LG BD570 (also purchased from Newegg) in my living room for my main TV and this BD530 delivers picture quality that's just as good as the BD570. If you want Netflix or the ability to...

Plays Avatar just fine right out of the box. Plays divx movies and mp3s from USB perfectly. Has a network port for firmware updates

No Netflix or Pandora and cannot stream media from my home server, but I knew I wouldn't be able to before I bought it
