Altec Lansing FX5051 review

A 5.1 rig that brings USB to the party

5.1 sound without a 5.1 sound card

No sound advantage from USB

A high-quality 5.1 system that provides a good solution for those with non-5.1 hardware

This famous name is differentiating its 5.1 rig from Creative's and Logitech's by giving it a USB as well as analogue input. The advantage of USB is that you don't need a 5.1 sound card for six-channel surround sound

Altec Lansing FX5051

Suited more for gaming and movies, this nice looking set of speakers is well built and offers many useful features but at a price.

Attractive design ; Good surround ; Wired and wireless remotes

Crackling noise at loud volume ; Poor audio reproduction ; Expensive

Costly surround set of speakers which better suited for gaming and movie with lot of useful features.

Altec Lansing FX5051

Great for office work and road warriors, but inadequate for gamers, graphics professionals, and media center users.

Clever design, Excellent sound reproduction, Deep bass, Powerful control pod with front inputs & outputs, Remote control bundled, USB & analog audio, PC & MacOS X compatible

Low hiss always present, Somewhat pricey, USB audio doesn't support multi-channel in all games, 'Free' wall mounts not included, No S/PDIF input for gaming consoles

Altec Lansing FX5051

Do you like a personal sound session or creating a neighborhood frenzy? Once you decide that, you may or may not consider this 5.1 channel speaker system option.

Good Sound Quality, Control Pod, Remote Control, Long Cables, Good Highs

Inadequate Bass at high volume, Confusing Rear Speaker Volume Adjustment, Bit expensive

I have spent much time testing and listening to Speakers and Sound Systems and have remarked of the quality of many of the "All in One" systems available. But what about great sound from the PC - especially from a Notebook Computer? While great strides...

Altec Lansing FX5051 5.1 Speaker System

There are so many great speaker systems for your PC, from 2.1, 5.1, even 7.1 systems, but to use them to their full potential you need a top of the line sound card. This is the dilemma a lot of people face when going out to get a new set of speakers....

If I were to suggest a PC speaker system for anyone this would be it! The easy setup and not having to have a sound card is ideal for anyone that is new to computers. If you do not want to spend the money on the FX5051's, Altec Lansing has the FX4021...

Consumer review (newegg.com)

Don't buy them. Period.

I've had these speakers for 1 year now, and they have recently started to produce crackling noises, the cause of which probably lies with the USB audio synthesizer, but this durability flaw is the least of its problems.

My primary use for speaker systems is listening to music, and let me tell you -- if you absolutely must have a surround sound system in this price range, check out the Logitech Z5500/Z5300 series, I've experienced those for a year and they are much...

Another major annoyance with this system is the constant, audible hiss that all speakers produce. As long as the system is on (even with the volume at 0), the hiss will be noticeable and may drive you crazy if your brain doesn't like ignoring constant...
