Hands on with the Netatmo Welcome - the camera that recognises who you are

So, is facial recognition a huge breakthrough in smart home tech, or clever but a bit pointless?

Simple app and setup ; IFTTT integration ; Possible HomeKit compatibility

Not 100% accurate (yet) ; Champagne gold...

Netatmo Welcome review: Big Brother is watching and knows who you are

Smarthome cameras are funny things, always on and always watching. Some love the idea of them, while others are less keen – and we can understand why they divide opinion. It's that thought of being spied on by parents, partners or family members. The...

Beautiful design, clever facial recognition technology, customisable individual profiles, less intrusive than competitors, smart and customisable notifications, no monthly fees, good picture and sound quality

No cloud backup, delay between event and showing in feed, no pan or zoom capability, facial recognition takes time to teach in order to gain accuracy and can falter, power restricts positioning

The Netatmo Welcome is among the best smarthome cameras we have had the pleasure of spying on us. It has a beautiful design that integrates well into the home, but it's the facial recognition technology that really won us over.

Netatmo Welcome review

A review of the Netatmo Welcome, an indoor security camera that recognises faces, and now pets.

At £199, the Welcome is relatively expensive for an indoor camera. But unlike the new Nest Cam IQ, it doesn’t require a subscription. The facial recognition isn't 100 percent accurate (neither is the IQ's) but at least the app lets you configure...

Netatmo Welcome review

For me, the word "surveillance" conjures Orwellian images of Big Brother. The line between security and privacy can certainly be a blurry one. The Netatmo Welcome aims to keep both intact by getting to know you and your family, and letting you go about...

The Netatmo Welcome successfully implements facial recognition in a consumer product for the first time. It has cleverly customizable notifications based around that feature and the specs to keep up with the competition as a connected camera.

In practice, it doesn't keep up with the competition as a webcam or a security cam. The camera is slow at everything. The live feed lags, the notifications are delayed, and it takes awhile to learn faces.

Netatmo still needs work, but it breaks new ground with facial recognition and shows enough prowess with that feature to be worth a look for anyone interested in cutting edge camera tech.

Netatmo Welcome review

  (Rating Hidden)

The Netatmo Welcome is a smart home-security camera with a facial-recognition feature. This means it can recognise who is in your home and alert you to unfamiliar faces. It's a great security idea, but does it work in practice? We put it through its...

Welcome smart home camera can see faces, but needs more smarts [REVIEW]

The Netatmo Welcome is a solid first effort but needs more polish.

Easy setup ; Excellent at picking up faces ; No subscription fee ; Nice Apple Watch companion app

Not suitable for watching sunny front doors ; Runs hot ; Slow to learn faces ; Can’t tell the difference between a living face and a video

Netatmo is a solid first effort but needs more polish.

Netatmo Welcome review

The eye-catching design and face recognition tech means the Netatmo Welcome is all about the visuals. However, it needs the right environment for both aspects to shine.

Netatmo Welcome review: This camera promises personalized security, but its facial-recognition feature falls short

While this security camera successfully takes the creep factor out of home monitoring, its marquee feature feels like a work in progress.

Easy to set up ; Able to personalize security settings for individuals ; Strives to make the home-surveillance experience less creepy

Facial recognition is hit-and-miss ; Lacks many key security features ; No cloud-storage option

The Netatmo Welcome shows promise with its facial recognition and personalized security features, but the camera and its app need more work to catch up to the competition.
