Samsung Gear VR

Samsung has made a habit of giving its Gear VR headset minor updates with every flagship phone launch. And it's done the same for the new Galaxy S8 and S8+ – although not a whole lot has changed.

For anyone interested in purchasing a VR headset and who's already a Samsung flagship owner, the Gear VR is a no-brainer. It's easy to use and the content selection keeps growing. There's plenty of appeal here.

Samsung Gear VR review: Days of Future Past

VR, or virtual reality, has a long and winding history. From the distant dream of Sega's VR, unveiled back in 1993, to the modern day it's-almost-here reality of Oculus Rift, it's Korean giant Samsung that's now here to, well, try and sell some more...

Wire-free VR experience unlike its rivals, optical adjustment, easy to setup and use, some fun experiences on offer

Limited software, Note 4 compatible only, image edge blur, limited equivalent resolution, joypad not included, may cause nausea

The first time we slipped the Gear VR on and literally looked around a whole virtual galaxy, head turning to take in what was to the side and behind, a part of us was impressed with the sheer spectacle. It's quite amazing.

Hands-on: Samsung Gear VR review: Immersive headset requires a Galaxy Note 4 to function - Pocket-lint

The Samsung Gear VR is not like other virtual reality headsets. Unlike Oculus Rift or Sony Morpheus, the Gear VR doesn't come with any display built-in

Samsung Gear VR (S6) review

Smaller, lighter... but exactly the same

Smaller design ; VR is just awesome

Still bulky ; Expensive

VR still has a long way to go, and not a lot of people will buy this... but if you buy an S6 you definitely should think about it.

Samsung Gear VR (2015) review

It's just after 6 p.m. on a Monday night, and I'm lost. And soaked. The Nemesis, one of my favorite ships in the game Eve Online but just a sneaky, cloaking foe in Eve Gunjack, has flattened my latest high score attempt. The glass that held my...

The Gear VR's relatively low price belies a compelling VR experience, and the games are quickly catching up to the hype. The headset is fairly light, and offers a completely cordless experience.

It only works with some recent Samsung phones. The mobile VR experience still pales in comparison to more robust upcoming PC- and console-based options.

The Gear VR is the best virtual-reality gadget you can buy right now, and a great way to jump into the world of VR gaming and entertainment -- just make sure you own a compatible Samsung phone first.

Samsung Gear VR hands-on review

Samsung has teamed up with Facebook-owned virtual reality experts Oculus to create its own version of the Oculus Rift, the Samsung Gear VR, which brings virtual reality to consumers by using the new Galaxy Note 4. We spent some time with it during IFA...

Samsung's definitely proving to be an innovator with its announcements at IFA 2014, with the Gear VR and the new Galaxy Note Edge smartphone. We think the Gear VR has the potential to be a big hit in the education and gaming markets, and the low price...

Samsung Gear VR: Everything you need to know and our review

Added Chromecast support means others can see what's going on in your headset

And that, in essence, is the Samsung Gear VR’s biggest problem. It’s the software. Although the list of titles is steadily burgeoning, there’s still nothing here that makes me stop and gape. Nothing that’s so compelling I absolutely must have it.

Samsung Gear VR review

Samsung's VR headset is a real eye-opener, but it's still early days for consumer-grade virtual reality

In light of the limitations outlined above, it’s understandable that Samsung has tagged the epithet "Innovator's Edition" onto the end of the Gear VR's name. This is obviously an early adopter device, and isn't ready yet for mass-market consumption....
