Pioneer PDP-5080XD Review: 50" HD Ready Kuro Plasma TV

By Andrew Fee (hdtvtest.co.uk)Read the full review

There has been a lot of hype surrounding Pioneer's 8th Generation screens, and some pretty bold claims from the manufacturer themselves

Best black level for flat panels so far ; Which gives it an extremely high 3000:1+ calibrated contrast ratio ; Excellent handling of standard definition content ; Flat gamma helps produce very film-like image ; Very natural colour reproduction, and ...

PWM Noise noticeable below ~12ft ("fizzing" pixels) ; Lower resolution panel noticeable at this size ; Grey sidebars with 4:3 content unless you go into service menu ; Terrible handling of input selection ; Typical plasma buzzing noise due to high ...

To summarise, the Pioneer PDP-5080XD is the best flat-panel that I have seen to date, and the only other display on the market right now that I would expect to surpass it is its bigger brother, the 1080p native PDP-LX508D.

A Pioneer PDP-4280XD Review - I decided to switch to a plasma, when the new top-of-the-line Philips LCD I bought was a real disappointment in terms of its black levels, i.e. the perennial backlight issues! So I returned the Philips (although I really like...

The Pioneer 4280XD a fantastic choice of television and quite possibly one of the best plasma options currently out of the market, before it's release there was a massive hype within the circles that follow this sort of thing and you should know that the...

Pioneer PDP-4280 XD

The Pioneer 4280XD is quite simply the best 42" TV on the market. Pictures on Standard Definition are breathtaking and blow away my Sony 36" CRT which in itself is pretty good. The only real problem is waiting for BBC/ITV to get on with launching Freesat,...

Manufacturer's Description

Nothing is as powerful and emotional as film. It's the very reason why Pioneer has put more than ten years of design, research and development into building KURO: a flat screen television that will let you see and hear film like never before. The goal was straightforward: to build a screen that delivered the absolute best picture quality in the world. A screen that was true to how filmmakers intended their work to be seen. The result is KURO. 'KURO' means black in Japanese; this is relevant because KURO screens have significantly deeper black levels than any other flat-screen TV on the market, some 80% deeper. The deepest black levels produce the purest colors, which reveal the sharpest details. This is KURO. The KURO screen gives you the ability to see literally every shade between black and white. Now, the film you see - and feel - on-screen is unparalleled in range and detail, the ultimate appearance of vivid and flawless color. The impact of what you see on KURO is unlike anything you have possibly seen before.
