Beautifully designed, individual, intuitive and excellent sound quality, so why does this AirPlay speaker fractionally miss the mark?

Good with voices, but needs to perform to a much higher standard to be seen as a serious contender

Cashmere finish ; Striking looks ; Expressive midrange ; PlayDirect works with some phones and tablets

Splashy, unrefined treble ; Ill-defined, woolly bass ; Relatively pricey

The Libratone Live isn’t unlistenable by any stretch, but there’s a lack of detail, finesse and refinement when stacked up against rivals such as the Cambridge Audio Minx Air 200 and Audio Pro Allroom Air One.

Libratone Live AirPlay speaker review

 

The speaker chassis is a triangular prism, with smooth rounded corners. There's a thick, chrome-finished metal handle on the back at the top that makes the Live easy to pick up.

Designed to impress, the Libratone Live is a mix of satin chrome and luxury cashmere wool in a choice of subtle colours. Dock free, music is streamed via AirPlay from iTunes and iOS devices.

Listening to familiar music on the Libratone Live is like hearing it with fresh ears.

The very pricey Libratone Live speaker offers generally high-quality audio performance, but its stunning, unique look was clearly the top design priority.

Striking design with cashmere wool cover. Powerful audio output with clear definition at moderate volumes. Streams audio wirelessly via Apple's AirPlay.

Extremely expensive. At top volumes, some deep bass tracks distort. No Volume, Mute, navigation controls on unit.
