Intel SSD 750 Series 1.2TB review

Is this the second coming for solid state storage?

Lightning quick ; Delivers real-world performance boosts ; Easy to set up ; Huge capacity

Incredibly expensive ; Non-standard connection for the 2.5-inch version

A marker in the sand for all the NVMe SSDs set to follow it. Intel's SSD might be a tough act to follow.

Intel SSD 750 Series (1.2TB)

It will require a bit of updating and possibly a tricky installation to use it in your DIY desktop, but the Intel SSD 750 Series is the fastest consumer-level solid-state drive around.

Fastest consumer-grade storage. Blazing throughput via a new NVMe interface. PCIe and 2.5-inch form factors.

2.5-inch drive doesn't use standard SATA interface. Motherboard and BIOS support is limited. Relatively short expected life and warranty.

The reward for all this work is storage that's capable of up to 2,400MBps throughput, which is way up from the 500MBps-to-600MBps of SATA SSDs. Now, we know this isn't for the mainstream user, but the well-funded DIY enthusiast now has a new way of...

Intel SSD 750 Series (1.2TB) Review and Ratings

This scorching-fast, cutting-edge SSD implements the new NVMe specification and speeds past any other consumer drive we've tested to date. It's a storage speedster's dream drive, but attaining those awesome speeds will take some work—and, maybe, upgrades.

By far the fastest consumer SSD available ; First consumer-focused drive with NVMe interface ; Reasonably priced per gigabyte, given performance and capacity ; Available in add-in card and 2.5-inch form factors

2.5-inch drive requires clunky adapter to connect to M.2 slot ; Only recent Intel chipsets officially supported, and most boards require a BIOS update ; No midrange capacity ; Some SATA drives offer better rated endurance, longer warranties

In short, Intel has ushered in a new age of super-fast storage with the SSD 750 Series. If you crave storage speed and have a Z97- or X99-based system with an updatable BIOS—and you’re not put off by the price—the drive should serve you quite well. If...
