Ease of use, optical resolution, great scans and software package, Auto frame detection
Slow on very high resolution scans ; price makes more versatile flatbed scanner or All in One device options attractive
Basic, budget, dedicated and compact film scanner that provides great software tools and good quality scans although the one-by-one scanning won't be to everyone's liking

Design, price, scan quality, QARE, bundled software
Flimsy and awkward to use FAU attachment, Glass Mounted 35mm slides not usable in FAU
The CanoScan 4400F is a versatile and simple to use flatbed scanner and certainly worth a closer look

Bulky and awkward to use FAU attachment, Mounted 35mm slides not supported by FAU
It's stylishly slim contours and pleasing to look at and it's not a bad performer either

Ease of use, optical resolution, FARE Level 3 processing, great scans, and software package
Slow on higher resolution scans that include the full FARE processing
The CanoScan 8600F is a fast A4 scanner with built in Film Adapter Unit (FAU) that can provide pro quality scans quickly and easily. An excellent bundled software package makes it an even more attractive proposition

Auto sharpening, colour restoration, scratch/dust removal processing and the like
The auto crop before scan doesn't get things right and can even give a horizontal crop to a vertical image! Dust removal software works but is not capable of dealing with dirty originals and the auto scaling/resolution settings don't allow enough control
The Scanjet 8200 is more business-scanning machine than strictly a photo scanner

Excellent scan quality, excellent range of scan tools, software bundle, easy to use
Slow software install, big-n-blocky design, flimsy film holders
Despite its unattractive blockiness, it is a corker, performing well and able to deliver stunning scans quickly and simply

Size, speed, supplied software
Quality of some types scans, configurability, only works with PC
Quick and compact, the ScanSnap is designed more for documents than fine print scanning, but the card scan function is handy

Excellent quality scans, 35mm, 120/220, 6x9cm and 5x4-inch film scanning and 6x4-inch print scanning at up to 3200ppi optical resolution.
No scanning control when scanning directly to a memory card.
A pricey but unique film (plus print) scanner with neat extra functions

Capture pages on the move, rechargeable battery via USB
Only scans in mono, only works with PCs, only two low res scanning modes
Really just a portable photocopier, you might struggle to justify the purchase
