Panasonic SA-BX500 review

It's not often we encounter a product that we just can't recommend, but the SA-BX500 pulls it off

At the price, not much at all

Shrill sound, tricky configuration and a real lack of sonic finesse

Not good enough to compete in this price class, and Sony’s £300 STR-DG820 thrashes it, too

Panasonic SA-BX500 review

Panasonic's AVR has HD audio-decoding, cool-running digital amp modules

All round performer ; Good Panasonic-link features

Surreal operation system ; Full of fresh air ; Dodgy remote ; No RoomEQ

Generally a good performer, but usability could be improved

Panasonic SA-BX500 review

Panasonic's 7.1 SA-BX500 is the most expensive receiver here, but it's also the only model with a multi-channel analogue input. This makes it a good choice for use with a PC.

With a fiddly configuration and a bright sound that can become harsh on the wrong speakers, the SA-BX500 is overpriced.

Panasonic SA-BX500 review: Panasonic SA-BX500

Panasonic SA-BX500

130-watt per channel AV receiver; onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding; can bi-amplify compatible front left/right speakers; lightweight design with all-digital amplifier; built-in compatibility with Panasonic wireless rear-speaker kit.

Doesn't upconvert analog video to HDMI; only three HDMI inputs; no onscreen display makes for difficult setup process; automatic speaker calibration isn't terribly accurate; no satellite radio support; very expensive given the underwhelming feature set.

Panasonic's cool-running SA-BX500 receiver sounds fine, but it's woefully underfeatured, especially considering its high price tag.

Panasonic SA-BX500

The Panasonic SA-BX500 sounds OK but is too hard to recommend because of too many limitations for its asking price. The wireless surround pack works well, but just adds expense to an under-featured receiver.

On-board Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding ; Wireless expansion pack works well

Expensive with optional wireless expansion pack ; Limited HDMI connectivity and upconversion ; No on-screen display ; Lightweight construction ; Hit and miss auto calibration

Conclusion In a tough market, Panasonic's left the SA-BX500 wanting, omitting what should be standard features such as analog video upconversion and further HDMI connectivity. The lack of any on-screen display also leaves the user in the dark somewhat....

Panasonic SA-BX500

i bought this receiver a few months ago and have had no problems with it. i think it holds its own when it comes to good sound and picture quality. if you are in the market for a decent receiver for not too much cash then this could be the one,...

no on screen display

worth it @ 299

To me, definitely worth it for the price. Please whatever you do, for a quality experience...do not skimp/cheap out for your new cables. Neighbor asked if I was opening up a dance club...lol

Sound definition I haven't had before, nice punch, stays cool, digital amp=very light but not a disadvantage

Defititely patience trying for inital set-up,rated for 130 per ch but seems less, no upvert to 1080,but tv has more than enough inputs
