Toshiba TDP-S25

The Toshiba's DLP technology generates a darker, more vibrant colour palette than that of an LCD projector. Its 2000:1 contrast ratio is much greater ...

Low-cost DLP

Dark, confusing menu system

The TDP-S25 improves on its S20 predecessor, but still lags behind competitors.

Toshiba TDP-S25U

The Toshiba TDP-S25U DLP projector comes in at under $1,000. We put it through its paces to see how it stacks up against today's competition.

Dual analog inputs and monitor pass-through. Good on-screen menu system. Good contrast measurement.

No USB connection and no remote mouse support. Noticeable image flaws. No auto-sync button on remote.

Product Specifications

The justly popular S20 Projector was legendary for its outstanding value for money, making it the choice of many first-time home cinema users. Now Toshiba Projection & Display Technology (PDT), leading manufacturer of pro standard data and video projectors, pushes the envelope of excellence a stage further to unveil the S25. The design and technical specs of the S20's successor have been retained, with one significant change - with increased brightness of 1, 800 ANSI lumens, the S25 is now ideal for use in inadequately darkened conditions. Like the S20, the S25's proven DLP technology delivers high 2, 000: 1 contrast. The SVGA resolution projector generates a electrifying home cinema atmosphere from a mere 1.2 meter throw distance, and can be adjusted from 4: 3 to the popular 16: 9 format. In ECO mode, its ultra-low-noise operation undercuts 33dB. The S25 is also available in versions with optional detachable camera and WLAN card. Its innovative and streamlined design, in sleek, elegant aluminum with boldly contrasting black panel at lens level, houses a host of must-have features. The S25 is Toshiba's invitation to first-time users to enter the fascinating world of home cinema entertainment. Operation is child's play with the icon-based on-screen display, and keystone correction ensures the picture quality is second to none. In addition, at a mere 3.0 kg the S25 is the ideal companion for mobile applications such as presentations on the road. The SC25 (with detachable camera) or SW25 (with WLAN card) models are aimed at conference use or the education sector. Maximum flexibility is guaranteed by the wide range of connection options. Two RGB and video inputs (RCA, S-Video), an RGB output plus USB and mini-DIN8 ports enable the S25 to communicate with DVD players, video recorders and TV tuners, but also with media servers, PCs/notebooks or digicams. And with separate audio connections for external sound systems, true cinema quality sound is a given. All the S25's functions are convenient to operate with the remote control unit provided - from the comfort of your own sofa.
