Sony Bravia VPL-VW40 SXRD Home Cinema Projector

Sony produces an SXRD based projector that doesn't cost the earth.

The VW40 provides ample proof that Sony's SXRD system really can work well at affordable as well as high prices. A little shortage of brightness perhaps limits its potential audience a touch, but provided you fit the criteria laid out in the last...

Sony VPL-VW40 review

We audition a Sony projector aimed at the mid-market

Fine detailing ; Nice design ; Good connectivity

Slightly anaemic colours ; Black levels only good with the brightness set low

This projector is a tough call, but if picture detail is your main concern, it will appeal

Sony VPL-VW40

Although there's room for improvement in the colour department, the Sony VPL-VW40 is yet another impressive advert for SXRD.

Exceptional picture sharpness ; Impressively little video noise ; Great design ; Decent price

Colours can look washed out ; The image isn't very bright

Conclusion Although the VW40's slightly drab colour saturations prevent us from being able to give it a whole-hearted recommendation, the clarity and precision of its pictures beats anything else in its class. Plus, its total freedom from technology...

Sony BRAVIA VPL-VW40 Home Theater Projector Review

As you can see, the Sony VPL-VW40 fits nicely within the current lineup of 1080p projectors. It lacks the extreme lumen output or placement flexibility of the AE2000 or 1080 UB, but compensates with a sharper picture and superior black. Even then, it...

Sony VPL-VW40

The VW40, I should mention right now uses LCoS technology - a reflective Liquid Crystal on Silicon. In that regard, it is reflective like DLP, rather than transmissive (light passing through), like tradtional liquid crystal projectors (LCD)

Great color - dynamic and accurate - after proper grayscale calibration ; Very good at shadow details ; Better black level performance than most of the competition ; Very good remote control ; 1.8:1 zoom lens for very good placement flexibility ;...

Out of the box color performance, needs serious work requiring a good grayscale calibration, as the default for Cinema, is way too cool (blue) ; No support for a 3rd party Anamorphic lens for those wanting true Cinemascope aspect ratio 2.35:1 ; Very...

If you decide on the Sony, and get it properly tuned up, you will be hard pressed not to fully enjoy the experience
