Sony VPL-HW30ES

The Sony VPL-HW30ES is half the price of Sony's debut 3D projector, but feels twice as good. Result.

Good all-round picture quality ; Much reduced crosstalk ; Great value ; Runs quietly

no 12v trigger output ; Still residual crosstalk in very specific circumstances ; Side-mounted AV inputs

Sony has worked wonders with the HW30ES, erasing the disappointments of the VW90ES from our minds with a projector that serves up a classy, hugely watchable and best of all impressively affordable big-screen 3D - and 2D - feast.

Sony VPL-HW30ES

Nice looks, easy to use, dynamic picture, smooth motion, quiet

Occasional picture noise, fastest motion causes some instability

Very capable, but there are better projectors for the cash

Sony VPL-HW30ES review

Sony's second-generation 3D projector is a sensation, regardless of dimension

Gorgeous 2D performance ; Deep blacks and excellent colour

No 12V trigger ; Minor crosstalk ; Separate 3D sync transmitter

Sony VPL-HW30ES review

If I was building a dedicated home cinema tomorrow, I would, without doubt, install a 3D projector. While cynics continue to shrug at the tsunami tide of 3D flatscreen TVs heading our way, and I also have some reservations, I've yet to meet anyone...

Sony VPL-HW30ES review

Cinema-quality 3D effects and stunning 2D images make this the best home cinema projector we've seen this year – but the price makes it only for serious film fans

High definition video playback was crisp and colourful, with Avatar’s blue Naa’vi warriors looking incredibly vivid. Darker images looked very accurate thanks to deep, if not entirely black, black levels and plenty of contrast, letting us pick out...

Sony VPL-HW30ES 3D projector

Review I've actually written several introductions to this review. One opened extolling the benefits of 3D projection over 3D TVs. I thoughtfully proposed that the key problem with 3D flatscreens is that they're just too small - rather than confound...

Overall, the VPL-HW30ES is a compelling argument for bringing big-screen 3D home. It’s a solid rival for JVC's similarly-priced D-ILA-powered DLA-X3 [8], and offers both excellent 2D and startlingly bright stereo. 3D flatscreens? Who needs ‘em? ®

Sony VPL-HW30ES

The Sony VPL-HW30ES home theatre projector that supports both 2D and 3D at 1080p and also converts 2D input to 3D on the screen.

1080p resolution for both 2D and 3D. Accepts 3D signals directly from Blu-ray players, cable TV boxes, and the equivalent.

External IR emitter needs line of sight connection for synching with 3D glasses. Comes without 3D glasses or emitter.

Sony VPL-HW30ES Home Cinema Projector

The Sony VPL-HW30ES is a fine all-round home-cinema projector with good-quality 3D, but you'll need to do a bit more wiring than normal.

Good overall performance. Good 3D effect. Reasonable value for money. Reasonably low power consumption.

Inconsistent 3D crosstalk. 3D glasses have to be recharged from time to time. No cable included for 3D sync transmitter.

The Sony VPL-HW30ES is a fine all round home theatre projector, with good quality 3D, but you'll need to do a bit more wiring than normal.

Sony VPL-HW30ES 3D SXRD Projector

Sony's VPL-HW projectors go back a few years, with steady model-to-model refinements. Last year it was the VPL-HW20; this year it's the VPL-HW30ES. Note that the HW30 now carries Sony's premier ES designation. But there's more than that to account for...

I’ve long since passed the point where I look back nostalgically and yearn for the image quality of those classic CRT projectors. But the fact that even a sub-$4,000 projector can keep us from pining for those good old days is more than just news; it’s...
