NEC VT46 Review and Commentary

This week NEC is releasing the VT46, a powerful portable with an estimated street price of just $995. The VT46 is NEC's competitive response to the recently released Epson S1. We will do a feature comparison of these two units at the end of this review.

The NEC VT46 and Epson S1 are both impressive entry-level products. They are both sturdy, well-constructed units with similar performance characteristics. After examining them in the lab, we cannot say that one is better than the other in overall...

Product Specifications

Fans of big screen feature films who don't want to leave the comfort of their sofa will be delighted with the home cinema experience offered by the VT46 home cinema projector. The projector's incredible ease of use is a convincing argument in its favor and even first-time users won't have any problems connecting it to a DVD player, computer or video recorder. The VT46 offers a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels (SVGA) and is therefore ideal for video and TV home entertainment applications. With a brightness of 1, 200 ANSI lumens, it also produces high-visibility images in only partially darkened rooms. In addition to feature films and football match broadcasts, you can also use it for the large format wall projection of photos taken by digital cameras. The VT46 home cinema projector will also captivate computer game fans: firstly, players derive greater enjoyment from the larger images and, secondly, it is very easy to connect computers, game consoles and other playback devices to the projector. Thanks to the short throw lens impressively large images can be projected on the wall, even in small rooms. Image widths of around 1.30 m can be achieved from a projection distance of only two meters. A full cinema experience, with an image diagonal of 2.50 meters, can be achieved by placing the projector around three meters from the wall. The new, smaller 0.7 inch LCD panel ensures the contrast ratio of 400: 1 that is demanded by the home cinema community. Manual color correction and an image optimization system ensure excellent images. The bright lamp (160 watts) has a lifetime of 3, 000 hours, which reduces operating costs per hour to only 0.15 cents. One feature of this projector that is particularly important for home cinema fans is the low operating noise of only 32 decibels. Digital keystone correction adjusts screen images to give an undistorted rectangular picture. The VT46 incorporates functions that are generally only featured in top-of-the-range models: progressive PAL and component input, which provides home cinema freaks with optimum projection results. It can be connected to DVD players, computers or VHS recorders via RGB/ Component/ S-Video/ Composite Video inputs. Source selection is just as easy: the user simply presses one of three buttons on the projector, or uses the simple remote control.
