Canon USA Canon Realis SX50 Projector

The 8.6-pound Canon Realis SX50 ($4999 as of January 11, 2006) is the only projector of the 16 we tested for our April 2006 issue's roundup that uses liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) technology--a hybrid of DLP and LCD systems. As such, the SX50...

The full-size remote works well. It provides remote mouse control, a pointer, and dedicated buttons for changing the picture mode and using the pointer function. Cables bundled with this unit include USB, computer (DVI-VGA), and component video...

This pricey LCoS projector excels at bright, colorful graphics, but sharp text requires a SXGA+ resolution source.

Canon Realis SX50

A big part of what makes the Realis SX50 ($5,000 street) worth noticing is that it's built around LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon) technology. If you haven't heard of LCoS, it's because there haven't been many LCoS projectors to hear about. With the...

LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon) technology sidesteps common problems of both DLP and LCD projectors. Bright image. Excellent color and overall image quality. High resolution

The native resolution is SXGA+ (1,400-by-1,050), which your current system may not support. Volume from the built-in speakers is barely loud enough to fill a small closet

A lot has been written about LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon) and how it promises to be a much better projector technology than DLP and LCD technology. The Canon Realis SX50, which is currently the lightest LCoS projector on the planet, goes a long way...

Canon Realis SX50

Before I go further, here's a link to a overview of SXGA+ LCD and LCOS projectors, who purchases them, and why, and where that market is going. However, in summary, many laptops today are now higher resolution than XGA (1024x768), and, also, there are...

Razor sharp image ; Invisible pixels ; Bright ; Accurate colors ; Zoom lens has wide range (1.7x) ; Excellent compression technology had no problems with other 4:3 resolutions, and did equally well with widescreen sources ; Very, very good color...

Remote lacks disk pad, limiting cursor control to up/down/left/right for computer presentation/cursor control ; Slightly noisy (not a serious problem, even in a small room) definitely noisy though for home theater

By far, the least expensive (Suggested retail: $4999) by at least $2000

Canon's Realis SX50 is the least-expensive LCOS front projectoravailable today—it's yours for a measly four grand. LCOS is a greatchoice if you routinely give presentations that include video and text. The Realis uses SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) imaging panels,...

Review: Canon Realis SX50

Until now, projectors featuring very high resolution, say in the class of 1400x 1050 or more, have been large, bulky, and expensive. So it is understandable that one of the most anticipated releases of the last few months has been the Canon Realis SX50.

Product Specifications

The XEED SX50's outstanding SXGA+ resolution - usually only found in larger, heavier, fixed projectors - delivers 3.1 times more pixels than SVGA and 1.9 times more than XGA. The SX50 clearly displays CAD drawings, technical data, designs and multiple windows. Gaps between the pixels of conventional LCD projectors can create an image that looks as if covered in a fine mesh grid. With virtually no gap between the pixels of the XEED SX50's LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon) panels, your displayed image will be clean, smooth and faithfully reproduced. Solving the contrast limitations of traditional LCOS projectors, Canon's revolutionary AISYS (Aspectual Illumination System) technology powers an incredible 1000: 1 contrast ratio for rich, deep tones, true blacks in dark areas and incredible detail in light areas. With 2, 500 lumens brightness, the XEED SX50 has the power to show midday presentations without drawing any blinds. AISYS technology optimizes the light path to prevent lamp-light loss while the LCOS panels reflect appreciably more light towards the screen than conventional LCD panels. The XEED SX50 has a new projection lens with a 1.7x zoom allowing strong magnification with little distortion and wide-angle projection. Two aspherical lens elements eliminate aberrations for high corner-to-corner contrast. To provide the best balance of images settings for each style of presentation, the XEED SX50 has four selectable modes: Standard, Dynamic (for maximum brightness), Cinema (for movies) and sRGB, for consistency with sRGB compliant systems. Canon's Pure Color Processing accurately separates images into red, green and blue and then faithfully processes these colors individually, resulting in fantastically clear and true colors. Combining 6-axis color adjustment and Customizable Image Registration, the XEED SX50 gives you precise manual color control. The XEED SX50's Human Centered Design means it is efficient and easy to use. The unit can be tilted up or down using one hand, and keystone corrections +/- 20 degrees both horizontally and vertically can be made easily. It connects to almost any laptop, VCR or DVD. HD is supported via DVI and Component Video connectors. RGB out is available for external monitor connection.
