BenQ MS517 review

With its classroom-friendly features and pricing, the BenQ MS517 directly targets the educational sector. At only £283, you're not going to be getting high quality here, but the projector should offer just enough for basic classroom use.

The colour palette isn't accurate, and the native pixel count is too low for much computer-based use. But the attractively styled BenQ can handle light-filled rooms, and generally does a proficient job of projecting images.

BenQ MS517

The BenQ MS517 is a data projector geared to classrooms that provides solid image quality at low cost.

The BenQ MS517 is a data projector geared to classrooms that provides solid image quality at low cost.

Some flaws in video. Feeble audio. No carrying case.

The NEC NP-VE281 has louder audio than either the MS517 or the Epson EX3212. It has very good data image quality; like the BenQ, its video quality suffers somewhat from the rainbow effect. The ViewSonic PJD5134 ($410 list, 3.5 stars) has typical data...

Expert Review

Has a very high contrast ratio of 13000:1, Sharp image even when projecting higher than native resolutions, 3D from a Blu-Ray player via HDMI, Brightness readings were extremely close to the advertised brightness, Estimated 6000 hours of lamp life when...

For very specific applications color may need a lot of adjustment, Resolution is low so not great for spreadsheets or teaching software applications, Lamp not very accessible., Not a short throw projector so the projector needs to be pretty far back to...

Ultimately, the BenQ MS517 has its pros and cons and they are important to consider. Being a native SVGA(800×600) projector means it will be a little cheaper than other projectors on the market with higher resolutions. Its 13000:1 contrast ratio makes...

great value for money, no issues setting this up and the 3D with PS3 worked great (I purchased active shutter glasses separately)

the native resolution of 800 x 600 isn't the best for viewing movies or playing playstation 3

BENQ MS517

For a less expensive projector, this is just what I needed. It's great for showing films and photos for my girlguiding units and text where necessary from my hp laptop. For my needs this is clear with no shadowing, easy to set up (plug n play), simple...

Still a fairly large unit from a technology perspective; but average for the market.

BENQ MS517

I didn't buy it for presentations but it is an acceptable alternative to a large TV, I tried it with an XBox, HD TV and 3D BluRay player and managed to get a 103" display on a magnolia wall. The menu allows you to adjust the image colour for the colour...

I think you you really need a proper white screen (under £40). Although it was more than adequate, HD isn't quite as good quality as the TV output (but I was using an 8M HDMI Cable). USB port doesn't allow Movie playback for which I would have given a...

Great connection options including HDMI Image quality and size is great, would recommend for a bedroom or small living room. Not tried 3D yet but its a great added feature option to have Quick cool down when switch off Eco mode

Throw distance, I have projector as far away from wall as possible, and though the image would be a bit bigger Speakers are a bit tinny
