buy something else.

It was cheap. It connects via USB. Scanner/printer takes the place of 2 desk items. It was to replace a much loved and still working flatbed-scanner which was so old it didn't connect via USB, sadly

Controls are less than user-friendly, in fact they are so confusing I still can't figure out how to work it. I still can't figure out how to change the resolution of a scan, if it is even possible... I HATE THIS SCANNER

Brother DCP-385C

By Nilofar Hadjanadjiboudine (digitalversus.com)

The scanner gives good image quality. The colours tend slightly towards red, but are sharp and overall pretty accurate. But it is pretty slow on the initial preview, taking 12,75 seconds. A full scan of a 300 dpi 4x6” print only takes 11.10 seconds...

Easy of use / good ergonomics ; Low energy consumption ; Quality and speed sufficient for everyday use – although the competition is better

Overall quality a notch below ; Lines visible on photo prints ; Slow ; High cost per page ; Can't take XL cartrides

The real plus point is this is a compact printer. For the rest: speed, precision and cost per page, it is down on the competition.

Canon takes 14 seconds and Epson 20. When it comes to the copier, a black and white copy takes 24.65 seconds and a colour copy less than 40 seconds.

Brother DCP 165C

By Justin Yu (cnet.com)

The Brother DCP-165C is the reason why people dread hitting the print button on their computers. During the testing process, we were derailed with hardware malfunctions and hiccups that left us shaking our heads in disdain. Although the $80 price tag...

Low cost to print; two-year warranty

Poor output quality; slow print times; awkward build quality; outdated design; creative software requires online connection; no USB cord included

We've tested plenty of printers at CNET, but very few have frustrated us as much as the Brother DCP-165C multifunction has. The counterintuitive setup, bland design, deplorable print quality, and crawling output speeds earns this printer a double...

We recommend you stay far away from the DCP-165C and check out the Canon Pixma MX330 instead: you'll be much happier with the Canon's auto-document feeder, 1.8-inch color LCD, and a handful of impressive driver features that will leave the Brother...

Brother supports its printers with a one-year limited warranty. The company's website provides more support by way of manuals, FAQs, service centre locations and software downloads.

Spend $10 more and you can get the Canon Pixma MX330, an all-in-one printer that adds a fax machine on top of the copy, scan and print features.
