Yakuza: Dead Souls PS3 Review

Yakuza has never been a wholly realistic game, but Yakuza: Dead Souls takes the series further away from reality than ever before, replacing polished criminals with zombies and in turn bringing a fresh and welcome new direction to the series.

Yakuza: Dead Souls is slightly awkward to play, is steeped in Japanese culture, has a likable sense of humour and is stuffed with content, so in spite of the zombies, disappointing lack of variation and bold new direction, it’s still very much a Yakuza...

Yakuza: Dead Souls Review

Mundane combat and a lackluster use of its characters prevent Yakuza: Dead Souls from capturing the energy and fierceness of its predecessors.

Story has a few terrific moments ; Improving your weapons provides a rewarding sense of progress

Bland, frequently frustrating combat ; Fails to capitalize on its charismatic leading men ; Poor integration of Kamurocho's attractions

Even when it's not being so irritating, the combat is too basic to be enjoyable. When you're fortunate enough to have ammo for a gun that shoots continuously, simply holding down the fire button as you run up to zombies gets the job done with minimal...

Kamurocho has seen better days. This pleasure district was once a place where yakuza could relax and enjoy the simple pleasure of clobbering each other in the streets. Alas, those days are over. A zombie outbreak has shifted the focus of life in...

Japan's game developers seem to be heading down a strange path in 2012. Several beloved game franchise sequels coming from the Land Of The Rising Sun this year have not only turned out to be disappointing, but disappointing in a way that defies...

The whole game is about as much fun as a zombie outbreak.

Another day, another zombie apocalypse to prevent!

Yakuza: Dead Souls’ lengthy campaign mode and RPG elements ensure fans of the genre, and the series, will have plenty to see and do - unfortunately, casual zombie hunters will not get the same satisfaction. While it is by no means unplayable, the poor...

Long renowned for being one of the most ridiculous and over the top franchises in the industry, Yakuza has spawned 4 excellent games between the PS2 and PS3. Its blend of open world RPG gameplay in a unique vision of modern Japan and mad minigames and...

Yakuza adds zombies to the gang wars - regardless of whether it should or not, 'cause all the cool games are..

Although Yakuza: Dead Souls gives a negative first impression with chunky controls and lack of an English dub, as you progress you adapt your play style compensate for the awkward controls. In addition, there's a lot to do in Kamurocho - in and outside...

Yakuza: Dead Souls Playtest – The World Through The Eye Of Goro Majima

While Dead Souls infuriates me at times, it still exudes the traditional Yakuza charm. This is enhanced by the fact that it just so happens to include one of my favorite NPCs of all time as a playable character.

While I generally play Yakuza games for the story, in Dead Souls I enjoyed the comedy of the non-story-related sub-missions much more than the main story’s melodrama. Weird.

Mom! There are zombies in my gangster game!

Looks damn pretty; Large, open, realistic world; Tons of mini-game distractions

Every battle plays out the same; Camera is a bastard

For what it is, though, a non-canon romp through some authentic-looking Japanese streets filled with zombies and ammo is damn fun. The shooting and main story might be bland, but the mini-games offer a nice break to the action... if you want to gamble...
