Donkey Kong Country Returns – Wii Review

Donkey Kong Country Returns – Wii ReviewPosted on December 16, 2010 | 2 CommentsIs Retro Studio's latest a load of old bananas?

I am in love with this game. About time Nintendo put the Kong where he deserves to be, at the pinnacle of Nintendo’s platformers. First time I think I've ever seen a game over screen on a Wii game, playing this. From the minute the disc was in, the...

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Donkey Kong is one of the oldest video game icons out there. He has seen many appearances, on various machines and in multiple video game genres, over the years and will actually turn 30 this year! The last time we saw him in a side-view platformer was...

Donkey Kong Country Returns’ issues would probably not even be noticed were it the first game in the series. While it may leave some of the most hardcore fans of the series slightly disappointed that there is no expansion on Donkey Kong Country 3’s...

Donkey Kong Country Returns

If I were Donkey Kong, I'd be proper miffed off by now. He invites Mario to play a small support role in his first ever action game, only for that conniving plumber to hog the limelight and run off with all the fame and glory, leaving Donkey to look...

Donkey Kong Country Returns definitely has its faults, and we'd wager that the majority of players will never see it all the way through to the end. Yet while the difficulty curve is ridiculous and the multiplayer is quite broken, the game's charm and...

Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) review

Donkey Kong? is getting on a bit, it's been nearly thirty years since he first kidnapped Pauline and bombarded Mario with a barrage of barrels. Since then Mario went on to great things, became the company mascot, and a gaming legend. Donkey Kong didn't...

Minor quibbles aside though this is a fantastic game, Retro Studios have once again, like they did with Metroid, revived a long dead franchise successfully. If you have a love for the old school, and who doesn't when you get to a certain age, then you...

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Retro Studios has managed to make a game that feels new and old at the same time, appealing to young blood and cynical old-timers who've seen it all before.

Although the two-player mode feels bolted on, it takes nothing away from the largely superb solo game. Moments of joyous platforming are interspersed with devious sequences that will leave the fragile-minded on the floor in a pool of their own tears....

Games review - Donkey Kong Country Returns in style

Mario's long-time rival returns with a 2D platformer that can no longer boast cutting edge graphics, but still offers some uncomplicated retro fun.

Well-paced, breezy action and one of the best designed 2D platformers of recent times. Charming animation and a great soundtrack

There's nothing approaching a new idea and the game starts to repeat itself well before the end. The motion controls, particularly the roll, are very unreliable

Donkey Kong Country is still no classic platformer, but this reboot comes surprisingly close to rivalling modern Super Marios.

Donkey Kong's newest adventure makes traditional platforming feel fresh again, thanks to clever level design and great artistic touches.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

The core of the jungle

A worthy successor to Donkey Kong Country ; Impressive, imaginative worlds ; Inventive, challenging boss fights

Co-op doesn't offer much

An impressive, worthy successor to the Super NES series - but only the brave will finish.

Gorilla marketing.

Nintendo's booth is one of the busiest at E3. Which is as you'd expect, what with shiny new hardware on show, a fresh bunch of never-seen-before titles to play and a huge fanbase desperate to give them a go. But it's not just twentysomethings in Mario...
