Mario Tennis Open Review

Mario Tennis Open is a stripped-back, mundane entry in the Mario Sports series.

Fun with a few friends

The tennis never hits its stride ; Far too easy until an 11th-hour difficulty spike ; Convoluted control schemes

Spicing up the tennis somewhat is the "chance shot" mechanic. During rallies, glowing circles appear on the court, corresponding to one of five shot types. Performing a shot on the colored circle causes you to perform a smash shot that can stagger your...

Mario Tennis Open review: Nintendo serves up a return to form

That time of year is drawing upon us. The time of strawberries and cream; of immaculately white shorts; of Cliff Richard awkwardly hoping to be asked to sing whenever a light shower hits centre court; of screeching at Andy Murray as he valiantly fails...

It's Mario - playing tennis! The special moves might be a tad too powerful, but otherwise the plumber serves up a well-aimed slice of sporting fun.

Not worth the money

There are many major problems with this game. The biggest disappointment being that the, aside from the menu, the game is not 3D. This does just feel like a standard DS game placed in 3DS packaging just to bump up the price.

Brilliant Pick and Play Fun

Really excellent game with nice learning curve opponents start fairly easy to beat but as the tournament goes on the players get tougher to complete. There are a few additional games such as hitting the ball through the hoops and a Mario game where you...

Mario Tennis Open: Suit up and serve against the world

When we last saw an original Mario Tennis title, Camelot and Nintendo had us traversing the halls and sidewalks of the Royal Tennis Academy in search of opportunities to level up our main protagonist in hopes of advancing through the school's leader...

Multiplayer, Mii customization, Easy learning curve

Not enough new features to advance the series

Mario Tennis Open Playtest: All Tennis, No Story

The single player tournaments and matches weren't really my favorite part of the Mario Tennis Open. The Special Games and multiplayer were.

1. There’s no nice community option like there is in

Mario Tennis Open

The Mario gang takes to the court in Mario Tennis Open. Get your lob shot and slice ready!

While Mario Tennis Open certainly has a lot going for it, including a good theme and the great production value we have all come to expect and enjoy from Mario games, ultimately there wasn’t really enough to keep me riveted to the game for long periods...

Mario Tennis Open Review

It's not the size of the racket....

Wealth of control options; Tournament, exhibition, and special modes; Local and Online Multiplayer; Your Mii

and that's it

Although the special modes tire after a few dozen serves and the modes are a little shallow, despite the constant stream of unlockables, Mario and friends are still a blast to play with and letting your Mii join in on the fun is a natural evolution for...

Mario Tennis Open Review

At the heart of Mario Tennis Open, there’s a fun core tennis experience. It isn’t on par with the likes of Top Spin 4, but there was potential here for another great Mario sports game if the strengths of the shot system had been nurtured.

The core tennis experience is pretty decent, for the most part; Very fun when a good rally gets going; Good fun in multiplayer, online and off

Silly focus on gyroscope controls ; Dull, unimaginative tournament mode; The X button shots can take a lot of the franticness out of the game; Very few online options and modes
