Mario Tennis Open review: Nintendo serves up a return to form

 

That time of year is drawing upon us. The time of strawberries and cream; of immaculately white shorts; of Cliff Richard awkwardly hoping to be asked to sing whenever a light shower hits centre court; of screeching at Andy Murray as he valiantly fails...

It's Mario - playing tennis! The special moves might be a tad too powerful, but otherwise the plumber serves up a well-aimed slice of sporting fun.

Not worth the money

 

There are many major problems with this game. The biggest disappointment being that the, aside from the menu, the game is not 3D. This does just feel like a standard DS game placed in 3DS packaging just to bump up the price.

At the heart of Mario Tennis Open, there’s a fun core tennis experience. It isn’t on par with the likes of Top Spin 4, but there was potential here for another great Mario sports game if the strengths of the shot system had been nurtured.

The core tennis experience is pretty decent, for the most part; Very fun when a good rally gets going; Good fun in multiplayer, online and off
