All this leaves me in something of a quandary. There are far better players out there but they all come with software strings attached. The Archos asks nothing of you and when all's said and done, does what it's supposed to, so it's not exactly bad. ...

Unlike most of the MP3 players here, the Archos 204 looks nothing like an iPod. Instead it's a rather attractive matt-black metal box with a colour screen set in an almost square face.

The Archos 204 has the best audio quality of the hard disk players in this test, but we were disappointed by its battery life. We liked its simplicity,but those who want a range of extra features should look elsewhere.
