Asus MG278Q 27-inch QHD FreeSync Gaming Monitor Review

Recently we checked out Asus' MG279Q, a stunning-looking 27-inch IPS gaming monitor with FreeSync, 144Hz and a premium price. Today we're reviewing a cheaper alternative -- the TN-based MG278Q.

144Hz refresh rate, FreeSync available up to 144Hz, color-accurate, bright, sharp image, QHD resolution, OSD joystick controller, solid build quality

TN panel

We don't hate TN monitors by any means and the latest panels look pretty good, but we still prefer IPS. In this case, the MG278Q matches its more-expensive stablemate in every area except for contrast and exceeds it in usable FreeSync range. Depending...

ASUS MG278Q Review

If you're willing to shell out a premium price for a high-performance gaming monitor, Asus' $549 MG278Q is an excellent choice. Its stunning 27-inch, 2560 x 1440 display is a bit more futureproof than your average 1080p monitor, and its super-intuitive...

- Good image quality. It's a TN, but when you sit in front of it image quality is really good. You need to change a few settings, to get sharpness right (disable vivid pixel) and lower brightness. - 144Hz is great, and FreeSync works

Around 40fps, there can be occasional flickering due to quick switching between 40 and 144 fps modes.

Coming from using a HDTV as a monitor you can already imagine the boost in picture quality but I have also founds with the ultra low latency, freesync tech (running on an RX480) it's really helped up my game with FPS games like Titanfall. Would highly...

Some pointless features like having a crosshair on your screen via the montors OSD settings, but this is a personal preference gripe.

The 144Hz refresh rate is an absolute dream!! Wow, it makes such a huge difference coming from standard 60Hz refresh rates. The resolution of 2560x1440 is also a good resolution for Windows desktop (turn on high DPI scaling for an even better effect);...

The TN viewing angles are really as terrible as everyone says about TN panels. This is evident when you stand up often from your chair and look downward at the monitor. You have to constantly adjust the tilt to minimize the weird "darkening" effect...
