Review: Samsung Galaxy Spica

A good and inexpensive Android phone facing stiff competition.

Cheap for the quality ; Vivid, responsive AMOLED screen in most lighting ; Fast in most tasks ; Small but comfortable ; Better button layout than original ; Good battery life and call quality

Just Android 1.5; apps, features limited ; Android 2.1 update will need Windows PC ; regular AMOLED hard to see in bright sunlight ; Poor camera for both photos and videos ; Too close to rival phones in pricing for what you get

Design and the AMOLED screenThose who have seen or used the original Galaxy might be forgiven for thinking they're seeing the same phone. In many ways, they're right: the button layout is almost identical, and many of the proportions are just as

Spica is not too shabby

This is a darn decent phone for the price, despite its shortcomings. If you are willing to root your phone (which is a very simple procedure) you can unlock a lot more potential. Do a google search for instructions, they are abundant. The Samdroid...

Good battery life ; Android OS upgradeable to 2.1 ; Lots of buttons ; Good screen, not AMOLED, but more than adequate ;

Not upgradeable to Android 2.2 Froyo ; Not enough RAM ; Limited internal storage space for apps ; No flash for camera

Awesome Phone

Just a look at what I have had before this. Sony clie' Peg-sj-22 -> iPod Touch -> Palmone Zire 31 -> Palmone Tungsten T -> Palm Tungsten E2 -> Palm TX -> Samsung Galaxy Spica Best device so far

Newegg didn't have it when I bought it so I bought it on overseas electronics, I then updated to android 2.1 and activated on T-Mobile Prepaid. I love it. Popped a 16 GB microsdhc card in it. Gets relatively awesome battery life

For Some reason it won't connect fully to T-Mobile's network so Android reports terrible signal. lastly no offical android 2.2 yet

Samsung Spica - great starter smartphone

I purchased this cellphone from NewEgg in black color. The phone is really nice with a nice bright LCD screen and with a pre-installed screen protector. However the default language was slovak and it took me a while to determine the right options using...

Price (best unlocked smartphone at this price) ; Great screen and form-factor - 3.2" is not that different from the 3.5", but much easier to hold ; Fast operation and user experience (responsive touch-screen) ; Android has nice free software ; Great...

No pinch to zoom ; No LED flash (not a biggie for me) ; Android 1.5 (Can be updated to Android 2.1 though) ; Build quality is good, though a little bit plasticky

Hi! Even without installing, the Galaxy Spica can read Korean text. If you want to install Korean text (keyboard) in your phone, you can get it from the Android Market.
