Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport review

The Sprint-exclusive Galaxy S5 Sport is colorful and powerful. But with fewer features than the standard Galaxy S5, at a higher price, it's not a great value. And AT&T's similar S5 Active is a better option for those who tend to drop their phones.

With its powerful S5 internals, colorful textured shell, and pleasingly tactile buttons, the S5 Sport is a very good phone. But given its price, and the fact that it generally has fewer features than the similar S5 Active or the standard S5, it’s hard...

Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport (Sprint)

The fitness-focused Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport is a top performer like its S5 namesake, but it adds nothing more than bloatware in exchange for nominal promotional value.

Spectacular screen. Excellent camera. Waterproof.

All-plastic design. Bloatware.

Fit Live and Conclusions The prime differentiating factor for the S5 Sport is Sprint's Fit Live app, which acts as a central fitness hub for MapMyFitness, S Health, and Spotify. Each service has its own strengths, and purchasing the S5 Sport also nets...

Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport ( cherry red)

That's about it. You still get the 5.1-inch 1080p display, an excellent 16-megapixel camera, a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, a heart-rate monitor, and Android 4.4 OS with Samsung's OS on top. The only thing you lack is a fingerprint scanner, which I...

Samsung's Galaxy S5 Sport has a grippy backing and responsive physical controls, and it comes in vibrant colors. It has nearly all of the Samsung Galaxy S5's software and specs.

Data is slow if you aren't in Sprint's LTE data footprint. The Sport lacks the convenience key of AT&T's S5 Active. A mountain of preloaded apps makes setup a drag.

Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport inches ahead of the original S5 by combining identical performance in a slightly more polished package.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport review

What's the difference between the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sprint's exclusive Galaxy S5 Sport? Mostly the bright blue or red paint job; the slightly rubberized design with physical rather than touch-sensitive controls; and preloaded fitness-related apps,...

Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport Review: Running in Place

The Galaxy S5 Sport purports to be a phone for fitness freaks, but comes off more like a vessel for Sprint and its promotional partners. It retains the standard Galaxy S5's best traits, but makes its worst ones even worse. AT&T users should look...

; Same great display, performance, and camera of the original S5; Free MapMyFitness and Spotify Premium trials; Rubber back is easy to grip;

; Sloppy build that isn't protective enough; Software is even more bloated than before; Sprint's LTE network is spotty in areas;

To be clear, the Galaxy S5 Sport is not a bad phone. It’s built on the foundations of a device that, while disappointing in hindsight, does too much right to be considered mediocre. Its 1080p OLED display is arguably the best in existence, with...
