Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 review

A capable media player saddled by aging Android software that may have trouble justifying its price

Front stereo speakers ; Kies Air app ; Larger display than iPod touch ; Contract-free Android device

Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread ; Price matches Nexus 7 tablet ; Poor camera quality ; No Hulu Plus or Chrome support

While there's nothing inherently wrong with the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 and the concept of a cellular (and contract) free Android device is admirable, it's doomed to be a niche product aimed at entertaining kids whose parents are already fans of...

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.2

A 4.2in Android iPod touch rival. Samsung Galaxy S3 on the cheap?

Excellent video codec support ; Excellent audio codec support ; Decent internal speakers

So-so screen ; Could do with dual-core CPU ; Similarly-specced phones at same price

Maximum volume is higher than the smarpthone average too, although there is some slight distortion at top volume and - predictably - sound quality is pretty lo-fi and bass non-existent.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2

Samsung's Galaxy Player 4.2 is a good iPod touch alternative, offering a large screen, great speakers and easy access to Android games and apps.

Click to EnlargeIf you want a portable media player and gaming device in one with a big screen, the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 is a good buy at $199. Unlike the equally priced iPod touch, the 4.2 also has a removable battery and expandable media...

Good battery life ; Plays media well ; Easy to use

Too quiet ; Poor camera ; Low storage capacity

Samsung has made a well rounded device that does everything you ask of it. Sadly there just isn't anything special to get excited about

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2

A viable Apple iPod touch alternative, the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 is a great way to run Android apps without buying a smartphone.

Well-built. Runs all Android phone apps. Solid sound quality. Acts as smart remote for Samsung TVs.

Two-year-old specs. No HDMI output. Lackluster camera.

Conclusions If you want to run 400,000 Android apps and don't want to invest in a smartphone, the Galaxy Player 4.2 is among your better bets. It's less expensive and more capable than the older Galaxy Player 4.0 and the Sony NQZ-Z1000 ($249, 3 stars),...

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 Review: Great All Around Android Player

Available in two new sizes, the Samsung Galaxy Player is a Wi-Fi-connected Android media player that complements Samsung's popular Galaxy phone lineup--with the advantage that it doesn't require you to be tied to a phone contract or monthly data fees....

Thin and light ; Good-quality screen is big but not too big ; Expandable storage

Mediocre cameras ; Plasticky, cheap-feeling build

With its generous display, expandable storage, and thin-and-light design, the Galaxy Player 4.2 is a solid option for anyone looking for an Android-powered media player.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 ( black)

The logic behind Samsung's Galaxy Player 4.2 seems fairly straightforward. You take Samsung's tailored version of the Android 2.3 smartphone software and put it on a pocket-size device with a 4-inch screen, and you should have an appealing alternative...

The Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 offers most of the capabilities of Samsung's popular Android smartphones, minus the phone and monthly fees.

Both the software and the processor are relatively old by smartphone standards. Parents should know there are no safeguards included to restrict access to age-inappropriate content.

When it comes to competing with Apple's iPod Touch media player, the Galaxy Player 4.2 is Samsung's best effort yet, but it's still playing catch-up.

Editors' note: The majority of this review is repurposed from CNET's review of the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 , which offers a slightly smaller, 4-inch screen and many of the same features as the Galaxy Player 4.2.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 Review

The expansion of the Samsung realm of wi-fi-only smart devices continues with the Galaxy Player 4.2 , complete with two front-facing speakers, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and a lovely display. This device is essentially a Galaxy S II at half-power and...

If I had to choose one Galaxy Player from the whole lineup released or announced thus far to work with, this would be it. The Galaxy Player 3.6 is just a bit too small to want to work with, and the Galaxy Player 5.0 is much too thick to want to have...
