Nokia Lumia 800 Review

Officially unveiled at Nokia World 2011 earlier today, T3 has gone hands-on with the Finnish manufacturer's first Windows Phone 7 handset

Tough polycarbonate chassis ; Free Nokia Drive sat nav ; Camera and screen

Average battery life ; Media still a pain to transfer ; Port flaps won't last

Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop called this the ‘first real Windows Phone’ and based on this performance, it’s hard not to agree - if you can stand the slightly smaller screen, that is.

Nokia Lumia 800

UPDATED: We've now updated this review based on usage of the Nokia Lumia 800 for around four months, which has included the first formal OS update, so take a look at our updated findings, complete with star rating.

Quality design ; Clever interface ; Speedy browser ; Intuitive contact linking ; Xbox integration

Internet text display dodgy at times ; No Flash video ; Zune player takes ages to copy video across ; Video recording not impressive ; Battery issues still prevail

The Nokia Lumia 800 is quite reasonably priced, costing nothing on as little as a £26 Orange or Vodafone contract with Carphone Warehouse compared with HTC Titan starting at £31 pm with Vodafone and £36 pm with Orange. Next Page: Interface

Nokia Lumia 800 review

Nokia is dead, long live Nokia. Having been written off in the Western world, Nokia is throwing all its eggs in one basket and hoping that its latest phone, the Windows Phone 7 powered Nokia Lumia 800, has what it takes to wow.

AMOLED screen, Nokia Drive, Nokia Music, Design

No front facing camera, no nfc, no replaceable battery

Get this and you will be deemed an agitator and not someone with just another iDevice or a big screened Android smartphone.

Nokia Lumia 800

Nokia's first Windows Phone smartphone looks the part but does it play it?

Beautiful design ; Well built ; Excellent ergonomics and basic performance ; The best Windows Phone phone ; Nokia Drive and Mix Radio are useful extras

Low res screen ; Only single core processor ; Smaller app store than iOS and Android

If you want to make doubly sure your phone doesn't come to harm the Lumia 800 also comes with a protective sleeve that covers the back of the phone. It looks surprisingly good and feels nice too, though we'd still prefer a proper leather case that...

Nokia Lumia 800 Review

The 800 looks cool, feels cooler and has multimedia skills to rival those of the 4S

If anything can mount a challenge to the iPhone/Android status quo, it'll be this joint effort from Microsoft and Nokia. Nokia is renowned for its hardware styling and camera quality, Microsoft knows

Nokia Lumia 800 review

The Nokia Lumia 800 lacks a few perks its competitors flaunt, but Nokia's first Windows Phone has a great design and performs solidly. Updated, November 21 2011

The Nokia Lumia 800 is probably Nokia's best smartphone so far. It has a sturdy and sleek construction, with a vivid display, paired with refreshing software from Microsoft. If you are just upgrading to a smartphone or you have one of Nokia's Symbian...

Nokia Lumia 800

The Lumia 800 has appeal for both professional and personal users, and the reuse of the N9 chassis design is a good move. The result is a solid Windows Phone 7.5 handset.

Solid build ; Elegant design ; Improved support for off-board services ; 8-megapixel camera

No Flash support ; Windows Phone 7.5 remains unskinnable ; No storage expansion ; No access to the battery

Windows Phone 7.5 still lacks support for Flash, and its rigid and unskinnable user interface won't appeal to everyone. Microsoft's app store is growing, but still has some important omissions — the BBC's iPlayer, for example.

Nokia Lumia 800 review

The Lumia 800 is a slick and engaging smart phone and its Windows Phone software has excellent social media integration. However, its camera isn't as good as we expected and we can't help but feel that there's better to come from Nokia on the Windows...

Windows Phone software is slick and fun to use ; Free music streaming with Nokia's Mix Radio ; Onboard navigation software ; Stylish, sturdy design

Camera is pretty average ; No microSD card slot ; Lacks a front-facing camera ; Not as many apps as Android or iPhone

Nokia Lumia 800 review

It feels a bit strange to write this, but in terms of smartphones both Microsoft and Nokia are currently the little guys battling against the giants of Google and Apple. It kind of makes sense, therefore, for the two companies to come together to fight...

A fast, smooth Windows Phone 7 smartphone with some decent free apps, but the camera lets it down

Nokia Lumia 800

We like the design and OS but there are too many holes in the Lumia's feature set

Small ; nicely built ; refreshing OS ; built-in Microsoft apps ; good cross-platform support

Video lacks detail ; no Flash support ; few third-part apps ; no wireless streaming
