Huawei Mate 9 review

A nice kind of déjà-vu

Incredible battery life ; Powerful processor ; Solid build quality

Higher price than expected ; Emotion UI still strange ; Not as Daydream-ready as hoped

The Huawei Mate 9 is a phablet that's built to last, with an impressive camera, powerful processor and great battery life. It's just let down a little by a larger price tag than we've come to expect from the brand.

Huawei Mate 9 review: The big-screen boss?

The Huawei Mate series did big-screen before big-screen was even fashionable. Now that it's an increasing norm, the Mate 9 finds itself the focus of greater attention than its predecessors - and for good reason.

A well-built big-screen device, huge battery for longevity (around 16-hours of proper use), decent dual camera arrangement (with optical stabilisation), dual SIM and twin-app support

Pricier than previous Mate models, only has Full HD screen, Pro version (China only) is so much nicer, EMUI 5.0 is ultra-strict with app permissions and persistent in notifications

What might come as a surprise about the Mate 9 is just how much it's like the Mate 8 - and we were expecting bigger changes, the kinds of changes we've only got to witness in the Mate 9 Pro and special edition Porsche Design models.

Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design review

A premium phone at a beyond premium price

Innovative camera ; Beautiful design ; Great QHD AMOLED display

Ridiculously expensive ; Emotion UI drags experience down ; Fingerprint sensor = fiddly home button

When is a great screen, strong performance, a fine camera and a desirable design not enough in a smartphone? When it comes with a ludicrous price tag, like the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design.

Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design preview: The mini Mate 9 with a big €1395 price tag

You had a double take, didn't you? No, this isn't a limited edition Samsung Galaxy S7 edge , it's the limited edition Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design.

Huawei Porsche Design Mate 9

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9 is a phone you probably won't buy. Most people shouldn't even consider it. Why? Well, because it costs over £1,000.

Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9 review

The best phone you probably shouldn't buy

Fancy design ; Great cameras ; Mammoth 256GB storage ; Loads of power

Insane price ; Not water resistant

A true rival for the best phones around. As long as you don’t look at the price.

Huawei Mate 9

The Huawei Mate 9 is an unashamedly big phone, and that's becoming an increasingly rare thing since the demise of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. For the albeit pricey RRP of £600 you get a huge screen, beefy battery, brand-new CPU and plenty of storage and...

Huawei Mate 9 review

The bigger the better?

Great screen-to-size ratio ; Gadget-packed camera ; Seriously powerful CPU and GPU

Not as striking as some rivals ; Battery spec is better than real battery stamina ; AAA price

A geek-pleaser Android phone with serious power and huge screen, in a surprisingly manageable body

Huawei Mate 9 review: A poor Note 7 replacement

It's fast and has a fantastic screen, but poor battery life means the Mate 9 just doesn't measure up as the next Note 7 replacement

Right now, the Mate 9 simply doesn't do enough to make it a worthy Note 7 replacement, and I'd advise opting for one of its cheaper 5.5in rivals instead. The Moto Z Play or OnePlus 3 both surpass the Mate 9 in several key areas and cost significantly...

Huawei Mate 9 Review: In Depth

Huawei Mate 9 Review: Huawei's latest Mate phone is a mighty 5.9-inch mobile packing a Kirin 960 processor and a fresh new dual-lens Leica camera.

Great software ; Premium finish ; Excellent battery life

Expensive

The Huawei Mate 9 isn’t quite the essential purchase that Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 was (before the whole burny screamy saga), but it is a very good super-sized handset.
