HTC U Play review

A playful smartphone with an identity crisis

Stylish, premium design ; Clean Android interface ; Strong cameras

Poor battery life ; Voice assistant not available yet ; No headphone jack

The HTC U Play is a solid Android smartphone. It has enough grunt under the hood, a decent display, strong cameras and smart bundled earbuds – but it’s a package which feels like it’s missing something.

HTC U Play review

Bets big on design, but could be more a case of game over

Lovely glass-metal combo body ; Decent enough screen

No headphone jack ; Faulty gaming chops ; Laggy camera

Classy and glassy on the outside, but there are a few too many problems inside to warrant the high price

HTC U Play review

  (Rating Hidden)

The U Play is one of HTC's more expensive mobile phone launches of 2017. It has 16Mp rear and front cameras, but how well do they capture detail in low light? Read our full verdict of the HTC U Play to find out whether it deserves a place on your...

HTC U Play Cameraphone Review

We review the ultra-stylish HTC U Play, with 16mp front and rear cameras, and optical image stabilisation.

The HTC U Play is a stylish, slim and attractive smartphone, with a good camera that offers optical image stabilisation, a 16mp BSI CMOS sensor, and a fairly bright f/2.0 aperture. Whilst the f/2.0 aperture is quite good, others smartphones are...

HTC U Play Smartphone Review

Play nice. HTC's U Play is a mid-range smartphone with a very nice casing and some highlights: for example, HTC installs a personal assistant called Sense Companion. But is the U Play's everyday suitability also convincing?

stylish and solid casing ; not much software ; lots of accessories ; preloaded personal assistant ; many LTE bands ; fast Wi-Fi ; NFC and USB OTG ; quick charge

no 3.5-mm jack ; mediocre performance ; fingerprint sensitive ; visible pixels in UltraPixel mode ; camera photos sometimes blurry ; moderate speaker ; muffled microphone

HTC's U Play looks good, comes with a personal assistant, has two high-resolution cameras, and it is bestowed with generous extras in its box. So, why is it so difficult for us to give it an unconditional purchase recommendation in the highly...

HTC U Play Review

HTC introduced its new glass U-series not long ago, and we already reviewed its flagship representative, the U Ultra. It is now time to move downmarket and inspect the HTC U Play, which comes with a more manageable display size, premium design, and 16...

Premium glass sandwich design ; Simple but highly functional interface

Price is quite a bit higher than the competition ; Softish photos ; Some graphical hiccups while gaming

The HTC U Play offers a very pleasant design to look and hold, a simple but functional interface, and decent picture and video capture abilities. It has a steep hill to climb against its direct competitors like the Galaxy A5 (2017), Moto G5 Plus, or...

HTC U Play review

The HTC U Play is a mid-range phone that's priced too high and comes with a list of problems. Camera performance is mixed, battery life is poor, and there's no audio jack - only a USB Type-C connector for headphones. It's not a phone we can recommend.

HTC tries hard, but often seems to make mistakes. A great deal of effort has clearly been expended with the "liquid surface" finishing of the phone, but to our mind, the result falls short of expectations. Likewise, the 16 megapixel cameras aren't any...

HTC U Play hands-on: the smaller smart listening phone

At the same time as the HTC U Ultra, the Taiwanese company launched the HTC U Play, a scaled-down offshoot with an almost identical design apart from the lack of a second display. Both phones come with the HTC Sense Companion, making the devices smart...

With the HTC U Play, the Taiwanese company brings its HTC Sense Companion to a mid-range smartphone, and also shows that the "artificial intelligence" can function without the second display of the U Ultra. With its hardware, design and intelligence,...
