Apple MacBook notebook review

By Stuart Miles (pocket-lint.com)

If you're don't deem yourself pro enough to opt for the MacBook Pro, Apple has updated its MacBook range to feature the precision aluminium unibody as well. But what is the real difference, and in these "credit crunch" times can you really save some...

Size, design, ease of use

USB sockets too close together, glossy screen

You are still paying £949 for the basic model, but for the first time the MacBook Pro and MacBook are very much of a muchness

At least unlike the MacBook Air, you get an Ethernet socket. Rather than opt for the industry standard HDMI, Apple has gone with Mini DisplayPort instead. Citing "engineered to standards that don’t even exist yet" the new video connector allows you to...

Apple MacBook laptop review

By Stuart Miles (pocket-lint.com)

With the announcement of the new MacBook, Apple has now gone completely Intel-based with its notebook range. Pocket-lint was one of the first in the UK to get a unit in for review, so should you be accidently dropping your current PowerBook so you've...

Screen, size, styling

Reflective screen, black coating, keyboard

Like most people’s Mother-in-laws, the verdict is still out.

The price while expensive for an entry level laptop, certainly compared to a PC variant, is to a point justifiable as the MacBook does have more flare about it than something that will cut your fingers every time you try to turn it on. Like most...

Apple MacBook review (2.26GHz)

By Jonathan Seff, (pcadvisor.co.uk)

The MacBook is the best-selling Mac model in Apple's history. So it makes a lot of sense that Apple has given its £799 white laptop a makeover in time for the Christmas shopping season.

The new Apple MacBook looks great in its new unibody design, although the lack of user-replaceable battery will annoy some. At £799 it's no cheap netbook - and that's a good thing, as this entry-level Mac laptop is fully powered.

Apple MacBook 2.13GHz (white) review

By James Galbraith (pcadvisor.co.uk)

If price plays a greater role in a shopper's buying decisions during tough economic times, Apple's recent updates to its entry-level laptop, the white, £749 MacBook, should help push some cost-conscious consumers over the laptop-buying fence.

If you're in the market for an affordable Mac laptop, the white MacBook is a better bargain than ever. With its impressive performance, battery life, the inclusion of FireWire, and more common mini-DVI connector, the only reason to pay more for the...

Apple MacBook (Early 2009 nVidia) review

By Andrew Harrison (pcadvisor.co.uk)

At £719 the 13in, white Apple Macbook is the most affordable way of getting an Apple laptop.

While we have our reservations about the cheapened trackpad and mouse button, the revised Apple MacBook is still a good value laptop with a very impressive balance of capabilities. A new graphics processor raises the game, making the MacBook...

It may appear expensive set against circa-£500 laptops but its inclusive feature set, generally high build quality and bomb-proof operating system combine to make the entry Apple notebook a wise purchase. Add in the powerful iLife '09 suite of...

Apple MacBook review

By Andrew Harrison (pcadvisor.co.uk)

We review the new Apple MacBook, the talk of the town that's sporting a body crafted from a single ingot of aluminium.

Some users may be put off by the reflective screen, and perhaps more again by the exclusion FireWire, leaving just ethernet and two USB for physical data ports. Then there is the issue of price, since the entry point for buying a Mac portable has now...

Yet it is in construction terms that the MacBook has the trump card. With evey component seemingly blueprinted for a low tolerance fit, this MacBook is a marvel of engineering, which truly feels like no other. To experience its build quality hands-on...

Powered by the Intel Core Duo, built from ultratough polycarbonate, just 1.08 inches thin - MacBook combines performance and portability like never before. Built upon the revolutionary Intel Core Duo - with two processor cores on a single chip - MacBook leaves other consumer notebooks in the dust. It performs up to five times faster than the previous generation iBook without compromising on size or style. At 1280 by 800, the 13.3-inch glossy widescreen display delivers 30% more viewing area than the iBook or 12-inch PowerBook - perfect for movies and more. And the ultra bright LCD makes photos and graphics come alive with color. You can also connect your MacBook via the mini-DVI port to an external display and create twice the workspace. With the built-in iSight camera, it's easier than ever to video chat with friends and family. Just fire up iChat AV and start chatting. Pick up the included Apple Remote, find a comfortable chair and treat yourself - or a crowd - to a show. The Front Row interface lets you summon forth your music, movies and photos from across the room. Your MacBook includes Mac OS X Tiger and the iLife '06 suite of applications, making it perfectly tuned to serve as the center of your digital life. Create photo albums, watch or make a movie, manage your email, and much more - right out of the box. Measuring just 1.08 inches thin, your MacBook still offers a full complement of ports and connections, including mini-DVI video, fast Gigabit Ethernet, and optical digital/analog audio. Plus you get the innovative MagSafe Power Adapter, a power cord that's held in place magnetically, so if someone should trip over it, the cable disconnects harmlessly and your MacBook stays put.
