Alienware 17 R4 review

A much-needed makeover to the biggest Alienware laptop

Wildly powerful ; Swanky looks ; Lots of configuration options

Obnoxiously loud fans ; So-so battery life

Sporting a more powerful processor, cool looks and a strong range of prices, the Alienware 17 R4 may be your best bet if on the prowl for a 17-inch gaming laptop.

Does Radeon do a gaming laptop good?

Super premium build ; Fantastic performance ; Bright, vibrant screen

Expensive ; GPU driver/switching issues

While you can get there for less, this gaming laptop is the express lane to high quality PC gaming.

The spec alone is mouth-watering, with a quad-core i7-4800MQ processor running at 2.7GHz, 16GB of memory and a high-performance GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB of video memory. UPDATE: see our 2014 Alienware 17 review to see how the Alienware 17 fairs with a...

There's no doubt that Alienware makes some of the most powerful and eye-catching gaming rigs currently available, and the fact that the Alienware 17 lasts more than four hours on battery power is a tribute to the efficiency of its Haswell processor....

Alienware 17

The Alienware 17 is a little pricey, but it's a powerful imposing gaming rig that can be taken from room to room or to a friend's house. It will serve you well on the game grid.

Alienware 17 (2014)

The Alienware 17 is a high-end gaming laptop with all the premium touches you'd expect, and performance to match.

Sleek design, with distinctive lighting effects and solid construction. Quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and latest Nvidia graphics card.

Pricey. Limited portability. Battery is sealed in chassis.

Conclusion There's no doubt that the Alienware 17 continues the company's reputation for having high-quality, high-performance gaming laptops. A premium price comes with certain expectations, however, and with the less expensive Digital Storm Krypton...

Alienware 17 Gaming

While it's less immediately impressive as a conversation piece, the smaller (of course, that's a relative term here) chassis is more ergonomic and easier to use while gaming, web-surfing, or even on those rare occasions when it has to go in a backpack...

Dell's Alienware 17 is highly configurable, looks a bit more sophisticated than previous incarnations, and still delivers excellent performance.

You probably don't really want a programmable lightshow for your laptop. No dual-GPU options, and battery life isn't going to help much with on-the-go gaming.

It's not as much of a conversation piece as the tank-like Alienware 18, but the slimmer, lighter Alienware 17 is arguably more practical for serious gamers with realistic budgets.

Alienware 17 review

What a difference a few inches makes. While the Alienware 17 desktop replacement gaming laptop is not all that much smaller than the 18-inch Alienware 18 version we recently reviewed, it feels like a much different beast. If the 18-inch model was a...
