Onkyo HT-S5200 Home Theater System First Look

Prices for home theater systems have absolutely plummeted over the past decade. If we were proving this in a court of law, Exhibit A would have to be the Onkyo HT-S5200 7.1-channel system.

This is an impressive little 7.1 system that is really priced right. What we like about it most is the fact that for $599 you get what is essentially a $399 A/V receiver. That means that you get 7 speakers and a 10-inch powered subwoofer for just $200....

Complete Satisfaction

Audyssey automated equalizer calibration neuters the subwoofer. When I set my speakers with Audyssey, I had a feeling that something wasn't right--I heard super-loud and clear mid- and high-range, but suspiciously anemic bass. Increasing the...

DISCLAIMER: I am not an accomplished audiophile; I'm just a guy on a budget, who likes good sound.

Feature-richness makes the remote a bit of a challenge. It's a 7.1 system, so in order to take full advantage of the system's sound separation, you'll need a space that allows you literally to surround listeners with speakers. I don't have such a...

ONKYO HT-S5100 Black 7.1 Channel Home Theater System

Not many movies make good use of surround sound (with a few notable exceptions) but is awesome for music and concert DVDs.

Great value

More inputs that support HD are needed (HDMI, Component, Optical) and less outdated inputs (S-Video, RCA) which mostly go unused

Awesome

Beats me what purpose the HDMI pass throughs serve. I have 2 HDMI output DVD players hooked to my TV without redundant(?) cabling. Everything except the TV sound works fine without it. I'm somewhat an audiophile, and playback of CDs is far superior to...

Just carrying coals to Newcastle here. The reviews are honest, this system brought the movies to life. Great bass, and surround listening modes for every source. I was considering a different system for about $150 less, I'm so glad I resisted the urge...

Heavier gauge speaker wire (and longer) would have been nice, and maybe I should have known the digital coax and optical cables wouldn't be included. I have my Samsung TV optical output connected but no access that I can find.

Awesome Stereo

For $400 the quality and features cannot be beat. If you are looking for a new stereo/HTIB, this will not disappoint you.

Very loud system, solid bass, good number of inputs.

No back light on the remote, HDMI Passthrough.

Great System

Overall this is a really nice surround sound system for someone not wanting to spend a ton of money. Sure you can get better for more money but the for the price this is a amazing setup. I would highly recommend this system to someone looking for a...

I have personally been into Home Audio and Car Audio for most of my life. I finally started piecing together my home theatre setup and I decided to go with this. It's a very nice setup. It look's great with the gloss black on the enclosures, very...

Of course with the good you always have the bad. I would have personally liked to have a little thicker wire. I know with the little amount of power being used the supplied speaker wire is good enough but just having a little bigger would have made me...

hidden jewel

The sub is a monster. The directions aren't too bad. If you're like most people, buy two optical cables - one for your Cable/Sat receiver and the other for your XBOX360. That solves the pass-through "limitation."

It's all about the sound stupid. After reading a gazillion reviews, it occured to me the reviews on this HT system most oftern included a comment about how good the system sounded. Other reviews for more expensive systems often left out comments about...

The design is a bit "old school" -- it ain't particularly slim or sleek. The HDMI are pass-through. So what. I knew this going into it. The LED could be a bit more sophisticated, I guess. But in the end, there realy isn't much to complain about at all.

Great All Around Package!!!

The sound is incredible, sub is huge amd powerful. I like the included mic calibration function. Color coded wire made hookup simple. Still tinkering to get the best sound. Dropped Star Wars in and watched a few scenes. My 17 year old son said it...

As metioned in other posts this thing generates some serious heat, not a problem since my rack is well vented. The speaker wire is thin but I plan on running better wire anyway. The speakers are large but that is well described if you actually read the...

great sound!!!

If you don't mind that Onkyo did not get on the Bose train with tiny speakers, this is a great system, makes the livingroom shake and the babies quake.

This is a great mid to low priced system. The sound is crisp and clean, the bass is deep. It has many set-up and tweaking options. This is not a Bose, but then nothing is, however for under $400, this is the best out there.

This is not a micro system for those of you who do not read specs....not a con for me, but the speakers and sub are much bigger and heavier than most modern HT in a box (think shelf system stereo size). My UPS guy nearly had a stroke bringing it in...lol
