Hands-on at CES 2014: £950 earphones with fearsome bass

Bass rarely gets better than this. If you have the cash to spend and want audiophile earphones that can pump out the low end, you need to hear the Shure SE846.

Shure SE846

Put performance first, and the SE846s are superb. The trouble is finding sources good enough to do them justice

Stunning detail ; Tonally balanced ; Strong dynamics ; Great comfort ; Secure and solid

Look little different from some of Shure’s cheaper in-ears ; Lacks the aura of luxury

A grand is a lot of money for any headphones, but given an appropriately talented system we think the SE846s are good enough to justify that kind of outlay.

Shure SE846 headphones review

Shure's range of earphones has expanded greatly overthe last eight years, with the SE line covering price points from£50 to well over £300. Until now the flagship was the £389 SE535,which replaced the SE530s that launched in 2007. Thatchanged this year...

Tremendous sound quality, exceptional detail and balance, sturdydesign, customisable sound signature using nozzle filters

Expensive choice, unlikely to suit very small ears

Recommending a pair of headphones that cost close to £1,000 isdifficult, because the law of diminishing returns is ever present. This pair being truly stunning examples of what can be done withaudio engineering in 2014 does not make the next-best pair...

Shure SE846

There are few in-canal earphones available that offer the stellar sonic experience of the high-end Shure SE846.

Stellar sound quality. Includes two detachable cables. Tons of accessories, including hard shell case, multitude of eartip options, inline volume adapter. Includes ear nozzle pieces to adjust sound signature to personal tastes.

Extremely expensive for a non-custom molded pair. No inline remote or phone controls for mobile devices.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," the sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the drum loop are delivered with the full fury of their lowest frequencies, but not in a manner that overtakes the rest of the mix. The most powerful sound here...

Shure SE846 Review: Sound Isolating Earphones

The Shure SE846 is for listeners who appreciate quality extensive bass response. Good noise isolation and fit, removable MMCX cables.

There are audio qualities that a simple EQ cannot achieve. On the SE846, the low-pass filter is delivering the sub-bass magic that is enjoyable without sounding too exaggerated. I like listening to pop tracks at high volumes with the SE846, where I...

Performance Build Quality Comfort Value

You guys know Shure; it’s best known as a microphone manufacturer, but millions of vinyl lovers have had long-term affairs with Shure’s phono cartridges. The company jumped into the earphone market in 1997 and focused on pro users—musicians and sound...

Changes every song I ever heard

I could follow the example of "I bought this a month ago and and glad I did". I shan't. I bought the shure SE425s a while back, as an extravagant purchase and they made me rethink how I felt about music. I listen to music for about an hour each day, so...

Impressive....Sometimes!

I have owned several Shure In-ears, on-ears, and over-ears over the years. And although I did move away to other brands for a while, I eventually decided to give Shure's SE846's a go. My initial unboxing experience was somewhat let down by the fact...

Great in ears

Greta product and the sound stage is really excellent you can ear every piece of the music, but are they worth the price tag? For me unless you are using a top quality player or a DAC to get the best out of these, if you have not got the set up you can...
