Audeze EL-8 hands on

Much-loved high-end headphone manufacturer Audeze has introduced a new 'entry-level' set of cans in the shape of the EL-8. We got our hands on them at CES.

Audeze EL-8 Open-Back

The Audeze EL-8 headphones may not be the most practical for public use, but their fantastic audio performance trumps any design inconveniences.

Superb audio performance with solid balance, robust lows, and pristine highs. Comfortable design. Open-back earcups provide excellent spatial detail. Removable cable comes in four varieties.

Less practical for public use due to sound leakage. Expensive.

The Audeze EL-8 Open-Back sound amazing. If the open design is not for you, or you just want to explore other options we've reviewed in this price range, we're big fans of the Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro, the Master & Dynamic MH40, and the Shure SRH1540....

Review: Audeze EL-8 Open-Back Headphones

Audeze delivers a planar magnetic headphone with beautiful, lifelike sound. But they're very expensive and very particular.

Beautiful, lifelike sound from one of the industry's top planar-magnetic headphone-makers. High-quality craftsmanship. Unlike many high-end headphones, they don't require an amp; plug them straight into your phone. Choose cables with built-in controls...

Design doesn't promote portability. Pricey at $700. There are better headphones for the office or the commute. They sound best with selections from the Brunch Music bin. You don't need a headphone amp, but they sound better if you have one

You've never heard it so good

I'll start be saying I won these through a Richer Sounds Facebook competition (yes it is possible to win) but I have no association with the company or the brand. So far I have spent about ten hours listening to music I love and music I thought I knew...

Quite disappointed

I have had these headphones for around a month now. Have to admit i am very disappointed. The first pair i owned had popping sounds in both ear cups when i moved my head. Richersounds are excellent and exchanged them for a replacement set (very good...

The god of my headphone collection

These so far dethroned all my top headphones. Deeper more natural bass than the M50X, or the HE-400, better 3d imaging, and speed than the AD900x, better comfort than the DT990pro. Mine is the 2016 refreshed model. It came in a white box shell, and a...

Excellent soundstage, vocals are natural, very easy to drive, sparkly highs, deep lows, comfortable, looks/feels great, firm solid cable

a bit heavy (Planar/metal case), lacks case for the price

Good, but not quite good enough.

So I treated my myself to a pair of EL-8 OB for Xmas and had really high hopes given the Audeze pedigree. There are many really positive aspects to these headphones. They are beautifully put together (I experienced no issues with the connectors), very...

Beautifully made, comfortable, great mid-range and vocals

Just lacking a bit of sparkle and openness

Amazing sound, thought it could have looked better for $700

I used the Audeze EL-8 Open-Back headphones paired with a McIntosh MHA-100 amp. I was in a quite room with foam on the walls to make the room very quite. I used Vinyl albums such as Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon,Miles Davis's Kind Of Blue, Adele's...

Very comfortable. very open and clear! Crisp mids and highs with a nice tight bass

short cable

EL-8 has me upgrading my studio

The EL-8 are a beautiful set of headphones. From the minute you get the packaging you know a lot of thought went into the design of every piece of these headphones. They are really beautiful. I think it's pretty well known that they partnered with BMW...

Even sound across the entire sound spectrum

Heavy, connectors, short cable
