Hitachi Travelstar 7K500-500 review

Laptop hard disks with a spindle speed of 7,200rpm used to be considerably faster than their cheaper 5,400rpm counterparts. As hard disk data density has increased, this difference has lessened considerably as more data can be read in a single...

Hitachi's latest 7,200rpm laptop hard disk costs more than a 5,400rpm equivalent but with little benefit, so it's not good value.

Hitachi Travelstar 7K500

This 7,200 RPM version of the Travelstar promises desktop performance on a laptop

Excellent performance, saves power, silent

Expensive, runs a bit hot (40 degrees C)

Hitachi TravelStar 7K500 500GB review

The Hitachi TravelStar 7K500 500GB hard disk drive has a 2.5-inch form factor.

The usual argument against 7200rpm drives for laptops was built around increased vibration, heat and power consumption as compared to normal drives. The Hitachi TravelStar 7K500 500GB drive manages to strengthen its case by providing improved speed,...

Hitachi Travelstar 7K500

This drive is meant for mobile users who want higher storage capacity as well as performance. The drive offers 500GB of storage capacity and has 7200RPM spindle speed for enhanced performance. Such a drive is useful for frequent travelers who love to...

This is ideal for mobile users who want to upgrade their notebooks to higher capacities.

Super Fast, Absolutely Silent

I have not tried any of the other 500gb 7200rpm drives, but this one satisfies. Best $90 laptop upgrade around.

Everything its cracked up to be, noticeably faster AND quieter than Seagate 160gb 5400rpm drive it replaced ; Used Driveimage XML to clone existing drive. Very straightforward, although cloning took over 18 hours

How much more to ship it with a USB drive case? I'm surprised this isn't an option on hard drive purchases ; Then again, $5 on eBay, shipped

Quieter than the WD Scorpio

The package it came with was different from what is shown in the product images by Newegg. I made sure the model number I got was right. Not a big deal.

Much faster than a 5400 rpm drive yet as quiet. I purchased this hard drive for my Macbook Pro (2007 version, not a uni-body) after returning the 7200rpm WD Scorpio 250g. The WD one had a random clicking problem and the spinning noise was also louder...

Good Product.

Popped it in my T61p laptop within minutes. Restored my "clean install" configured archived, Vista image. I used the Thinkpad rescue and recovery utility. This is an IT support laptop where uptime is paramount. No loss in performance from moving from...

Large Disk Space. Quiet. Compatibility. Cost

None really. You get exactly what you paid for and that was advertised. A solid replacement drive for a laptop that is appropriate for even a power user

Drive does not have BDE!

Found this out the hard way - since you can't compare the exact model # from the Newegg site (without buying it) - but here it is: HTS725050A9A364 -tried and tried to get a BIOS-level HDD password installed (Dell D620) - contacted both Dell and Hitachi...

Good drive - good price - haven't had any problems w/Travelstars in many years of use

No BDE - won't take encryption or a BIOS-level HDD password!! I would return it but I've thrown out the boxes
