Hitachi TravelStar 7K500 500GB review

Although targeted at laptop usage, you could just as well use the Hitachi TravelStar 7K500 on a desktop or any other environment where you want a compact storage drive, since it uses a standard SATA-2 storage connector interface. The form factor is the...

The usual argument against 7200rpm drives for laptops was built around increased vibration, heat and power consumption as compared to normal drives. The Hitachi TravelStar 7K500 500GB drive manages to strengthen its case by providing improved speed yet...

Hitachi Travelstar 7K500-500 review

Laptop hard disks with a spindle speed of 7,200rpm used to be considerably faster than their cheaper 5,400rpm counterparts. As hard disk data density has increased, this difference has lessened considerably as more data can be read in a single...

Hitachi's latest 7,200rpm laptop hard disk costs more than a 5,400rpm equivalent but with little benefit, so it's not good value.

This 7,200 RPM version of the Travelstar promises desktop performance on a laptop

Excellent performance, saves power, silent

Expensive, runs a bit hot (40 degrees C)

Hitachi Travelstar 7K500

Super Fast, Absolutely Silent

I have not tried any of the other 500gb 7200rpm drives, but this one satisfies. Best $90 laptop upgrade around.

Everything its cracked up to be, noticeably faster AND quieter than Seagate 160gb 5400rpm drive it replaced ; Used Driveimage XML to clone existing drive. Very straightforward, although cloning took over 18 hours

How much more to ship it with a USB drive case? I'm surprised this isn't an option on hard drive purchases ; Then again, $5 on eBay, shipped

Died in 6 months

Apple Macbook Pro uses Hitachi. I did not expect this quality from Hitachi. Will see if they can replace it under the warranty.

It worked well while it lasted in my Dell XPS 1530

Died after @ 6 months of use. Did not have time to get a backup. Pretty much, I am scr**ed. Don't buy this drive. If you already have it, then always have a backup. Hope this helps

FAIL - 14 months. Sudden. Devastating

Spend more on a better brand - especially at this capacity and application.

Upgraded from stock MacBook 120GB, started out noisier than predecessor but quickly became white noise. Drive ran fast, good cache. Drive still runs, just not any data or recognizable drive

Fail!. Noisy. Drive still runs, just not any data or recognizable drive. My fault for not backing up as frequently as Hitachi storage would likely recommend

Superb.

Very fast, silent operation. Had it 1.5 years now, and it still runs flawlessly
