By Gerald (pixmania.co.uk) Read the full review

Having used a magellan for many years, I found this unit has many more useful features but takes time to get used to. It is more sensitive and very economical on battery use.

Sensitive & economical on battery life

I have difficulty fitting some rechargeable batteries due to the size of the battery compartment

Garmin ETrex Vista HCX

As a rambler I have used a standard Etrex for 7 years. The Vista HCx acquires sats more quickly, has a better battery life and has a much better screen. Its additional features are numerous and take some getting used to. The important ones for me are...

The extra features lead to a complex menu system which is probably inevitable. The manual is too concise and a fuller explanation of the features would be useful. The mapping available from Garmin seems expensive

Portable Gear

The fully-gasketed, waterproof, high-impact, plastic-alloy Garmin eTrex Vista feels as if it belongs in your hand. Although the eTrex Vista is compact, it has a solid, balanced feel that the other devices in our roundup lack. Apparently, the device's...

The device's weight (5.3 ounces, including the batteries) balances nicely with the feel of the rubberized contouring on the sides and side controls. It's also the best fit for a range of hand sizes, whether male or female, large or small.

Garmin ETrex Vista HCX 010-00630-00

By (toptenreviews.com)

Including an SD card would be a nice way to make eTrex Vista HCx stand out even more among GPS systems, but we think the geocaching capabilities and long battery life will make it a good fit for many users.

The battery life is truly impressive

This unit does not come with an SD card

This is a pretty solid choice, especially for geocachers.

Manufacturer's Description

Deep foliage, nor canyons phase the rugged eTrex Vista HCx. Its high-sensitivity receiver holds a GPS signal in the toughest environments. Similar to the Vista Cx, this handheld navigator also has a bright color screen, barometric altimeter, electronic compass, microSD card slot and automatic routing for wherever adventure takes you. With its high-sensitivity, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver, eTrex Vista HCx locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The advantage is clear - whether you're in deep woods or just near tall buildings and trees, you can count on Vista HCx to help you find your way when you need it the most. The Vista HCx has a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even while you're standing still, and its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions. Adding maps is easier than ever with Vista HCx's microSD card slot. Conveniently plug in optional preloaded microSD cards with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and Vista HCx provides turn-by-turn directions to your destination. The card slot is located inside the waterproof battery compartment, so you don't have to worry about getting it wet. Like the rest of the eTrex series, Vista HCx is lightweight and compact - the perfect size for all your travels.
