Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) 3000 review

Sony's new re-brushed and buffed-up PlayStation Portable 3000 handheld video game system should finally be dangling from plastic retail hooks or resting in neat little rectangle stacks on shelves as you read this, but should existing PSP owners think...

If you're a heavy PSP user with wads of cash to blow, need the external mic, or want to play games on a standard TV, the PSP 3000 is the sleeker, visually crisper twin to last year's model. If you're an original PSP owner and skipped the PSP 2000,...

Sony PSP 3000 review

With its impressive game library, lower price and expanded feature set, it's certainly a much better deal than the original PSP -- and it's even better than the PSP 2000. While its media and online functions won't necessarily replace a dedicated AV...

Light, slim enclosure ; Better colour reproduction ; Built-in Skype ; Deep line-up of great game titles with better graphics than Nintendo DS games

UMD load times slow ; Screen isn't completely glare-free and is still a magnet for fingerprints ; No built-in storage

Someday, no doubt, Sony will debut a full-on PSP2, with a host of next-gen features and a more radical redesign. But for now, we've got an evolutionary upgrade of a portable gaming and media console that already had a lot going for it. Existing PSP...

The latest version of Sony's PSP multimedia portable is the most competitive yet, with a brighter screen and built-in microphone

Bright, colourful screen; superb user interface; excellent mobile gaming; increasingly broad range of features

Still limited in content options and capacity next to some alternatives, although they're not games consoles

Keep up with your TV viewing Visit the Go!View service from Sky, and you can download TV, films and sports events to watch (at a cost, of course) on your way into work.

Sony PSP-3000

The latest incarnation of Sony's handheld games machine, the PSP-3000, is possibly the most powerful, visually-lavish handheld console that money can buy. But is it perfect? Far from it…

Great, anti-glare screen

Screen can go fuzzy at times. Not enough new features

No one can accuse the PSP-3000 of lacking power. Lacking in new features, though, is a different matter.

The Sony PSP is undoubtedly one of the sexiest pieces of handheld kit available, and it's already had one makeover (see

Okay, so the Nintendo DS is a cutesy, fun, touchscreen-toting handheld, but Sony still provides the glorious eye-bleeding on-screen action. This third incarnation of the sleek, black multimedia machine boasts a screen with more colours than ever...

Don't get us wrong, the screen is glorious, but occasionally you do get some annoying scan lines, which can mar your gaming/movie-watching experience. Also, battery life was poor before, but with the expanded screen sucking it dry quicker than a kid...

Review: Sony PlayStation Portable PSP-3000

Light, slim enclosure; screen offers better color reproduction than that of earlier PSP models; improved AV output for video and game playback on TVs; built-in Skype with onboard microphone; retains all of the impressive media and online features of...

Screen exhibits noticeable jaggies and scanlines during high-motion video and gaming sequences; UMD load times still poky compared with DS games; screen isn't glare-free, and is still a magnet for fingerprints; Web browser and data input can be...

While there's probably not enough to get owners of the previous PSP to upgrade, newcomers will find the PSP-3000 to be a solid portable gaming and multimedia device.

Latest Sony PSP-3000 gets disassembled…

As you will know the new PSP-3000 barely shows any physical difference from its predecessor, the most obvious finding if you were given one to compare is that
